Hoping someone has the colt I'm looking for!
  • So I had a tobiano pony stud who passed all the basic tests and was exactly what I wanted for my pinto pony breeding program. I used him with my pony mares and he consistently produced color and foals over a full point higher PT than he is... And then I upgraded to premium and was able to do SBA, and of course it gelded him. lol

I tried five times now to get another like him with the same herd helper with no luck, so I'm hoping someone out there has a similar stallion they don't use for sale reasonable. I adore Whiskey, he reminds me a lot of a real champagne pinto mare I used to know. If no one has another like him, I'll just have to keep stalking the herd helper forum and trying again. lol Thanks for reading!

  • I have a boy from my bootstrap herd. He's a Silver Sable Champagne Dun Splash Frame 10.70 A. He's out of a Red papered RS mare buy a Star stallion, if you use breeding advice on him he'll get gelded because of being uneven bred. I have too many colts this year and don't have room for more show horses right not. image

  • @NowandForever, I'm looking for a champagne dun tobiano pony colt or stallion homozygous for at least tobiano, but thank you very much for trying!

I've seen people mention horses having even or uneven breeding, but I didn't know that uneven breeding would lead to altered foals. That explains why almost everything I've bred passes basic breeding advice and then gets altered when I do SBA! lol I was under the impression it was a personal preference thing, not something you have to do to get intact foals.

  • The Breeding Advice (and Strict Breeding Advice) tests compare the foal to both its parents. If a horse is significantly worse than either of them, it won't pass.

With uneven breeding, you are taking one high quality horse and breeding it to a lower quality horse. The foal will end up somewhere in the middle -- so it is always going to fail a BA test, because it is always going to be worse than the high quality parent. That's why you don't want to use BA or SBA when uneven breeding.
  • I used the Horse Search to look for Champagne Tobiano pony stallions both for general sale and in Sunday's auction.

There aren't any results yet. However! Your should keep trying using the horse search to find something you like -- auctions happen 3x a week and you never know, you might find a great replacement horse that way!
  • @GeneverGinger Thanks for more information about uneven breeding, I had no clue! I read the FAQ on breeding, but I must have been too hopped up on allergy meds because I didn't get that from it. lol The stallions I've been breeding with all produce better than themselves, and my mares are mostly from foundation and papering out red, so yeah. It all makes sense now, and explains why a couple nice mares I bought hadn't been through SBA and then failed it for me.

I have been using the search to look for another champagne dun tobiano pony stud, both for auctions and horses for sale, but so far I haven't gotten lucky. I did get a colt from a herd helper a little while ago that's het for all the traits I wanted, but I'm still hoping for better before next breeding season.

If I luck into a Candy pony, I have a grullo splash tobiano to GMT to champagne, but with my luck the last few days, SBA would geld him right after. lol

  • SBA is a harsh mistress, it's true! And I think the details of the game just take a little while to sink in for most of us. You are not alone.

Good luck in your search! I'm sorry I don't have anything like what you're looking for, but I hope you find it soon!
  • SBA is definitely tough sometimes. It took out a few of the stallions I started with, but the only hard one to replace is Whiskey. I didn't quite realize how rare he was in the game until SBA gelded him and I wanted another one. lol

I've been following horse color genetics since the 90's so I thought I'd have no trouble with this game, but it turns out it's not all just breeding for color like I thought at first. I have no doubt there's still a lot I don't even know I don't know yet, but I'm having fun figuring it all out! :D

Thank you for trying, and for the help figuring things out! :)

  • You might also search all horses in general, not just the ones for sale/auction, and then message the owner if you find one to see if they'd be willing to part with it. I'm sure a lot of people have horses that they are hanging on to but might be willing to sell if you explain your situation. Just be polite about it of course, and know they might turn you down. ;)

  • I have a hom Tobiano herd helper I will try out
  • I'm not sure if I have what you're looking for, but you're welcome to look. Let me know if something catches your eye and we can try to work something out. :)

  • Also, just so you know, since SBA is a lot stricter than BA, it's mainly only used as another method of culling and keeping numbers down. If you feel like you need to, then keep on using SBA. But if you bred an expensive foal (through AI for example) or fall in love, if it passes BA it should be good enough to breed from.

  • @lallyhop I've been looking, but thank you. I'll definitely keep trying!

@MF3 Don't waste your hbs for me if they're not something you might want. I'm kind of short on hbs compared to most until after the auctions end.

@Haltanny Thank you, I'll be sure to check in the morning when I have a chance to really look. Right now I've been up about twenty hours and I need to sleep. :)

@ObsidianKitsune Thank you, I wish I had known that before! I had gotten the impression it was best not to breed anything that couldn't pass SBA, especially stallions, so once I could do SBA I ran all my stallions through it. The others SBA gelded were pretty easy to replace, but Whiskey is evidently a rarer create. If I can't find or create another like him by next breeding season, I may end up unaltering him and just not run SBA again. He passed everything else, and his AFPT was decent compared to my others.
