First time GMT advice needed
-
Hey there. I'm finally trying out the GMT and I was looking any advice or tips when picking Foals for modifying. Thanks for any help!
-
If you are going to change a lined horse, you can only change them to what their parents have. For example, if the dad is EE and the mum is ee, the foal will always be Ee. Gmting a foal is great for adding on genes that they missed, but can be limiting.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Just make sure the parents have what you want to gmt on to the foal

If you're changing the gene-set for a foundation create, you can alter it to have any genes you want and can afford. :DDe gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

If you’re picking lined foals, you only want to modify your very best foals that missed a gene. So, if you’re modifying gen 2 foals, you want to modify your Blues or As (for example). I tend to be more willing to modify the genes of colts than fillies, since I get more “bang for my buck”. I also am quite likely to make inconsistent foals consistent (again, especially those really good foals I don’t want to snip or sell for being inconsistent) or to make colts who compare where I want them but are excess for that line into fillies.

Ohh wow, there's a lot to it! So if I create a foundation foal, can I pick a gene to add or is it like Obsidian said? I can only take, for example, an ee then turn it to eE?
-
So how does splash3, kitm, other rare genes get started ?
-
Thanks SandyCreek, I didn't see your comment before I asked the last 2 questions. Thanks much, your input is greatly appreciated!

Most of the rare genes get started by adding them to a foundation horse. So, if you take this foundation guy of mine for example:
Day of the Moon ExP DPKPY
You can see by the tattoos on his page all of the work that I did with him to make him a Hom KP Hom S+ Chocolate Palomino with Kit M and Tobiano. -
Genes that get tattooed as question marks are “Hidden” genes, so anything that doesn’t show up in the gene test results. Those include DP, GP and KP.
(Dense Pheomelanin, which makes chestnuts liver, palominos chocolate, and also alters bay colors. Gulastra Plume, which, when homozygous, gives bay based horses a white tip to their tails. Kit Promoter which gives homozygous horses with 2 Kit genes “clouds” on their coats. My boy isn’t showing his clouds but he is so pretty I don’t want to reroll him!) -
By foal I was meaning "lined" foal. You can add any genes onto a foundation that you want, so long as you have the gmt tokens for it and that they're gmtable (4 years or younger, no living offspring).Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

and intact. Altered foals or created horses cannot have genetic modifications.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
