Mare papering
-
So I've bred some of my girls enough to have them paper for the first time. I've got a few yellows and a lot of reds. Can someone explain mare papering and what it means? How much is influenced by the quality of the stallions I'm putting the mares to? Should I keep re-papering them every season? Should a top notch producer or perfect foundation paper better than the average mare? Just a bit confused about the value of the test!

To be honest im not so smart on it. I have. Afew red papered maresLife is Special live it to your fullest

For foundation mares, yellow is an acceptable paper. It is approximately equal to a C papered stallion. However, many foundation mares do paper red, even when bred to C papered stallions (which all foundations stallions paper in this game). I always spay 2nd gen mares that paper C, though and often will spay their intact daughters. A top notch producer or perfect foundation will usually paper red.
However, where a mare papers is influenced by the quality of the stallions she is bred to. The average foal PT is part of what goes into determining her paper level, but other things, which Ammit has not revealed, are also part of the calculation. I wouldn't bother repapering every year, unless you see a marked upward jump in her AFPT.
When I first started playing, back in 2011, Ammit had the game set to automatically repaper mares at certain intervals, but I"m not sure if that is still part of the game. That was before she did a complete reworking of the papering system so that the mare and stallion levels were more nearly equivalent. In those days, anything below a *Star stallion wasn't worth keeping even for foundations. There was even a contest where those who entered started out with a base of about 6 B papered stallions and the goal was to be the first person who managed to breed a *Gold papered mare starting using only lines that started out with the stallions registered at the beginning of the contest. Someone actually managed to do that.
I'm not very good at culling my mares, so I can't give you much advice beyond what I've already said. I higher generations, I do check to see if a mare that papers the same as her dam shows a marked increase in the AFPT and neuter those who don't do that. Perhaps someone who follows very strict rules for culling their mares will enter this discussion and tell you how they do it.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
