Best way of seeing what my best showing horses are.
  • What defines which horses are showing best?
I know the different statistics: profit, earning, level, points. But which one should I be using to know what horse is the best show horse on my stables?
  • Someone else is probably better able to answer this than I am, but I'll give some input.

The answer is, it depends. Do you want to know what your best show horse overall is, or the horse that is currently showing best? Would you define it by the leaderboards or points? The definition of "best" is really kind of up to you, based on what you value.

The current system is most profitable based on cumulative points, not earnings in hbs. So a horse can be having a bad year and not earning a lot of hbs for you per show, but he/she is still accumulating points, which adds to your weekly bonus. So points are more important than earnings.

If you go to the Search Horses screen, you can search your horses by putting your stable number in the Owner ID box, and then on the left under Advanced Sort you can search "Points This Year", "Earnings This Year", and overall categories for both. There is a "Best Showing" category there and I'll be honest, I never used that before, maybe someone can clarify what the parameters are on that.
  • If you can access the Performance Test, that is another factor to consider. The higher the PT the farther a horse can advance through the Levels, although in this game, with its shorter year, the horses with the highest PTs (in the 12's and 13's) are in Level 6 at ages 6-8, with several years to go before they start leveling off.

However, high PT is not necessarily a guarantee of success in the show ring until the horse does level off and and settles down at a good place in a higher level class. At this point in the game's life, the most profitable horses have PT's in the 10's and 11's, with a few in the 9's, and the horses with the most points have PT's mostly in the 10's. All of these are older horses.

Always remember that as long as a horse hasn't leveled off, it is still improving its showing level with every training. If a horse has just leveled up, you could give it a week off from showing to gain another week's training advantage which will most likely put it closer to the middle of its classes. Unless a horse levels off earlier than 8 or 9, it's probably worth keeping and showing until it levels off at the bottom of a class. Then, if it has a decent number of points, keep it anyway to add to your showing bonus, and don't bother showing it any more. If it levels off in the middle or the top of its classes, keep showing it.

  • I checked out the search for Best Showing with my own stable. The ranking there seems to be based on a combination of high lifetime earnings and high lifetime points. Their profits seem to be all over the place, so profits doesn't fall under what is sorted for. All of the top horses in that search from my stable are older, leveled off horses.

  • Should I get rid of a few horses that leveled off at a young age?
  • Ok,so I found this topic interesting. I am a relatively new player compared to Sandy and Abbey. My oldest foundation creates are now 6 years old, so anything I have that's older I've bought along the way. I have stringently PTd along the way and culled a lot of horses that didn't meet my standards there (or stuck them in the pasture to be breeders). I have some early spays and geldings doing quite nicely in my show string, but according to the Best Showing search, my best show horse is a 15 year old Rank Special mare showing at level 3H with 33 points. Most of my first 25 are like that--older mares I bought for breeding with higher levels but few or no accumulated points. In my next 25 I start to run into 2nd gen 2 year olds and foals I've bred, again who have essentially no points and currently are at low levels. It's not til I hit the 3rd page of 25 that I start to see an occasional 6 year old and then it's not my kids with 100ish points already on the board.

So, it looks like best showing may have more to do with potential than actual points on the board! That said, I'm pulling that mare out of the pasture and showing her when she's not breeding!!!
  • That depends. If they are intact: No, not because of that alone. Breeding ability and showing ability has nothing to do with each other.

If they are not intact, you should see how they show first. If they are winning, there is a good probability they will keep on winning for a while.

  • Best showing on the search is just how much training they have. Nothing more exciting then that.
  • Aha! Thanks for explaining that, Ammit.

  • A long time ago in HaJ1, my daughter had a stallion who was an excellent breeder but had a very low PT, 2.? if I'm remembering correctly. Even though he was only showing at Level 2, he was usually near the top of the class and so was making some profit when he showed. He ended up with a profit of over 2K by the time he passed out of the game from old age. So, yes, if a horse with a low PT is lucky, it can still make a small profit for you over time. (The older players may remember the days of the MAB horses. He was one of those.)

And Maribo is right. A poor show horse may be an excellent breeder. I had a mare in my early days on HaJ1, with a 2.? PT. She papered Red and was one of my most outstanding foundation mares.

  • That might not be entirely true, ammit. I have checked, and I have a foal placing higher than some of my young horses.
