Unaltering

Got this lovely boy but he failed breeding advice... but he is A papered and 11.40 consistent. Not to mention he’s cute! He is also het KP and a pearl carrier.

I am going to unalter him when I get the funds to. I don’t really hear of people wanting to breed to an untested so I will probably use him privately. Thoughts on this?

  • Considering he's worse than his sire, he'd get the automatic snip in my barns. Regardless of color/genetics. If I had a horse that I absolutely desperately want to breed but he's not up to the quality I expect for that generation, I'll make them a show breeder. But that's almost always for mares only. I'm very strict with my boys and I personally will not spend a token to unalter a worse than sire Colt. But all in all it's completely up to you. If you really want to use him and you can justify spending the token on him, then go for it. But if you want to improve the lines, keep him as a show pony and try again next season
  • I only unalter horses if I plan to boost them as well, but that gets pretty expensive, expecially when you mess it up as often as I do, and have to RE do it to get something even worth having! :P

  • Yeah.....I wouldn’t unalter an A son of a Star... even if you’re willing to invest an entire 5% boost token in him you might not get a Star paper on him. His dad is young. I would try to get some Gold mares and go back to his dad to try to get a superior colt.

If you’re just too in love with him to send him to your show herd as a gelding, I would consider unaltering and making him a filly. That way you keep the genetics. I’m generally more lenient with mares than stallions as far as papering and comparison goes, and this is my go-to solution when a lab foal is gorgeous but not up to my standards.
  • Thanks guys! I think I will go with Cheers and make him a filly.
