My heart is breaking.

I raise rabbits for food, and, even if I butcher bunnies, the sudden deaths make me sick to my stomach. My favourite, loving girl Snøball ("snowball") suddenly got sick last night. Today she was worse, and we took her to the vet for some penicillin (you can not buy penicillin without seeing a vet/doctor here). An hour or so after we got back, she was gone. She left us 9 17days old kits + one 14days old fosterkit. My son will be heartbroken when he comes home on monday to find his bestie gone.

Oh no! Rabbits are so fragile....I hope her kits all stay healthy! Sending you a big mental hug and also a hand disinfecting your pens so whatever she had doesn’t spread!Thanked by 1Maribo

I used to raise rabbits as well, and it's so sickening to lose a favorite. So sorry.ID: 16853Thanked by 1Maribo

Oh I hope they make it. Thank god they have at least started nibbling on hay. But they were very thankful to get a meal from a syringe this afternoon. They are tre prettiest things ever too.
I don't think it is anything that can spread. Pretty sure she had han an infection of some sort, probably mastitis. She went down hill pretty fast. I wish I would have taken her in last night, but she was on her feet and we got some banana and water into her, and I got her kits to drain her teats pretty good, so I didn't want to have to pay night rates at the vets. Sad to say, but when the rabbits are food I have to be a bit cynical. If she didn't have such young kits I might have just ended it last night. Or maybe I wouldn't, as she was the sweetest bunny ever. -
Hope the kits make it . Rabbit ? are they easy to foster or are they more like mares and only some make good foster mothers or more like dogs and willing to foster all and any ?ID #21047

Oh, so sorry to hear that! Hugs to you and strength to the babies!

So sorry! It's horrible to loose an animal. Especially when you are not expecting it. Sensitive good thoughts your way!

Thank you all <3 The babies have already found out where food will be coming from, and now when I open the door to their cage, they all come running into my hands. It will be hard to send these ones off to freezer camp. I am planning on keeping one for the future (or maybe two or three, but don't tell my fiancé). I need to keep a part of her around.<br />
@supersarah They are very easy to foster, as the kits does not have a scent (to not attract predators). I will foster kits with up to a weeks age difference, although I prefer less, as it is easy for the bigger kits to push the smaller ones aside. The mothers could not care less. I have never tried to foster kits that have started to move around outside the nest though.Thanked by 1supersarah
