What is a good start up number for a line?
-
I have 5 lines.
KP GP line just started
Splash M
Nexus line
Joeys Dream line
Halloween Dancer line
I am trying to figure out my mares for each of them. I want to keep my lines small so was wondering if 30 mares would be a good start for each line?
-
Thirty mares is plenty. I might even recommend half that many, if you start with PFs, RS, ExPros, anything with a known quality, if you're strict about offspring. :) If you aren't strict by quality, or if you want room to weed out mares, thirty is probably good.
What say everyone else? -
I start with 50 mares per stallion. This is why my numbers spiral totally out of control in a couple of months. But it’s also why I manage to breed myself a massive show herd....

You can always be adding to your herd of mares too, don't forget. Start with however many you have now / have the money and stall space for, and then you can evaluate at the end of each season whether you'd like more mares based on whether you have the money/stall space to keep the foals and whether you feel you're getting enough foals from that line with the number of mares you have.
Like Cheers, my goal is to have 50 mares per stallion for all my lines because I figure that's the best way to grow my line quickly because it'll get me more lined horses in the line (right now my struggle is principally getting enough fillies in each continuing generation).
