AFPT Culling Advice
  • Ok, so i want to get better at understanding how to cull by AFPT so i can tighten up my lines. What AFPT do you want to see at each generation? Or what increase from the parents AFPT do you want? What PT score do you want to see at each gen? When you cull, do you sell back to the game to get rid of that score? I have so many questions! Can someone please explain how it works?

I don't utilize AFPT on mares currently but I would sure like to.

I have a 10 PT G2 cutoff right now for snf, and a 9.8 for thunderstruck, and they must be red. Otherwise regular stock I have a mandatory 10.5 G2 for red mares because I have too many born, and all blue stays right now. My next possible herd sire must be over 10.5 as a G2 and be papered A however I do test all potentials. AGA sire or worse get sold. Better than sire only as G2.

My G3 line has got to be over 11Pt and A papered for herd sires. I'll keep 10.5PT, but they all have to be blue mares. I might wince and keep a special colored red mare but I don't like to.

Anything over G3 I have to see 11PT+. No less than Blue and A.

But Im just revamping my pasture system so I may utilize AFPT more than cutting off and limiting keeper foals. Not sure yet.

  • It's not that accurate if the mares have only 1 or 2 foals, but say I have heaps of red gen2's or heaps of blue gen4's and I want to cull the older ones, I simply open up all their pages so the AFPT updates and then cull the lowest ones. Gen3's I just cull the red papers so don't use AFPT much. I don't have specific generation AFPT cut offs, I just cull the worst ones until I'm happy with what I've kept. I still keep all the foals and they'll either be show horses or have to live up to the same standards of each generation. I never cull a horse on PT itself
