Help, where's the tobiano?
-
I created this horse with a Grullo Roan Tobiano HH, AND she got sb1 from the sugar on top.

There are only two Kit alleles shown per horse, and hers show sb1 and roan. So where's the tobiano in a case like this? Is it 'hidden' or did she miss it despite the HH, because the sb1 took its place? I made three of these and none of them were phenotypically tobiano. I wasn't sure if it was a coincidence or if they really did miss the gene.
What about a horse that is, say, het for a LOT of Kit genes? Roan, tobiano, w2, sabino, all at once. Are the 'extras' hidden, or is that combo not even possible without a special HH? Can a horse be, for example, hom tobiano AND roan (either het or homo)? I'm super confused about the 'missing' genes.Thanked by 1supersarah -
The sabino from today's Sugar on Top event replaced the tobiano on the second Kit that the HH would have ordinarily produced. It will do the same for any other HH that normally puts a gene on the 2nd Kit and I believe that all of the het pattern herd helpers change the 2nd gene. It is impossible for a horse to have more than 2 Kit genes (or any other gene for that matter).I was jllewis on the old forum.

Ohhh okay, that explains it.
Is that consistent with real life, do you know? -
There is only so much space on an allele. It will work similar in real life, however I don't know how many "kit" genes a horse can have. It'll be an even number, though. They always are.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Yes a horse can only have two KIT genes in real life, one from each parent
-
It is indeed consistent with real life. That's the way genetic inheritance works, whether it's trout, ducks, horses or people. Each parent has two copies of every gene, one that it got from its father and the other that it got from its mother. Each parent hands on one copy of each of its genes.
When sperm and egg cells are created, the chromosomes that carry the genes divide and the pairs of genes are separated. One copy goes into one cell and the other copy goes into a second. If the two copies of a gene are different, the sequence of genes each egg or sperm contains is relatively random, except when two genes are found on the same chromosome.
So, every horse gets one copy of the Kit gene from its sire and a second copy of the Kit gene from its dam. It will never have more than 2 copies of the Kit gene, and those copies cannot be different from what was available from the sire and the dam.
The only exception to this genetic rule is the one where for some reason an extra copy of a chromosome gets handed on because one doesn't separate properly. This causes either the offspring to die or to have serious malfunctions if it survives. Children with Down Syndrome, one common instance of this, have 3 copies of Chromosome 21. The game does not produce such genetic mishaps.
