Had you purchased a lower level upgrade? I forget exactly when it was that Ammit consolidated the upgrades into two levels instead of five--the basic and the premium upgrades. Basic is what is listed on your public stable page when I check it. That is the equivalent to the former Level 4, I believe, and it was given to anyone with a lower upgrade level automatically.

Ammit would have to give you a definitive answer, though.

As for tips, the easiest two are: show all your horses regularly to accumulate points and build up your weekly showing bonus, which is the best money-making option in the game, and check out the Foundation Rescue, Owner 13, for perfect foundations, the best at showing and breeding that foundations can be, as well as perfectly consistent in their showing scores.
