ive just started... entered a mixture of horses into shows and now some are world level and some are local level... they have all done the same training and none have any points... how does this work?

When a horse is created, it is assigned a random starting show score, usually between 0 and 10, although a few end up with a negative score to start. When they are trained, which you can do once each week, they will add a certain number to their show score, depending on their potential showing ability. So, some newly created horses will be in Level 1 Local, and some will be in Level 1 National, and so forth, depending on what their base score is.
Foals and yearlings cannot be trained, so they will not add anything to their base score until they turn 2.
There are 8 levels of shows: Level 1, Inhand; Level 2, Green under Saddle; Level 3, Green over Fences; Level 4, Training; Level 5, C Level; Level 6, B Level; Level 7, A Level; Level 8, Grand Prix.
In each level there are 4 grades: Local, Regional, National, World. When a horse gets to the World Grade in a given level, it will move up to the Local grade of the next level.
Except for Level 1, in which all four grades are contained within a range of about 10 points, each Level/Grade spans about 10 points in the show score, so horses with scores between 10 and 20 will be eligible for classes at Level 2 Local, those with scores between 20 and 30 will be eligible for classes at Level 1 Regional, and so forth. Once horses reach Level 6, the grades may cover more than 10 points. I am not certain exactly which grade this happens at because I've been letting auto-shower take care of entering my horses since before Ammit made the additions to the spans of the higher level classes.
When a horse is entered in a show, it earns a number of show points depending on where it places in the class. The number of points assigned is based on two factors: the level and grade of the class and the number of horses in that class. If there are only two horses in a class, as is the case for Level 1L, for instance, the winner gets 1/2 point (.5) and the loser gets no points. The points are recorded on the horse's page and the totals on your stable home page each night at midnight roll-over. Each horse keeps all the show points it accumulates throughout its life, even if it is sold to a new owner. Each week, at midnight between Saturday and Sunday, when the weekly roll-over takes place, your stable will receive your weekly salary and a showing bonus, which is currently 50% of the total number of points your horses have accumulated. For this reason, it is wise to enter your horses in shows twice every week on a regular basis, so that they have more chance of gathering points and adding to your showing bonus.
Every horse also is also randomly assigned a degree of inconsistency when it is created. This hidden number affects the actual score which a horse will make when it shows. If it is perfectly consistent, its score will be the same (its base score) both times it is shown. If it has a consistency of +/- 1, it may receive its base score, or one more or one less than that. For example, such a horse, if its base score is 24, for instance, might score 23, 24, or 25 in a given show. Higher degrees of inconsistency will produce larger possible ranges of scores.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I have one correction to SandyCreek's thorough explanation. The showing bonus on HJ2 was recently increased to 75% of your total points. On HJ1, it is currently 50%. The difference is because game years in HJ1 are 2 months long instead of 1, so the horses train for twice as long before they level off and therefore reach higher (and more profitable) showing levels than horses of the same training ability on HJ2.I was jllewis on the old forum.
