Getting hom snf out of het snf?
-
How does one tell if I’m going to get a hom snowflake out of my het snowflake mare? I read something about it somewhere but I have no idea what it said :-SEasternShowBarn

First colour test the foal. Then go to the snowflake breeders club. If the foal shows up in the dropdown, the foal is hom.
Are you breeding the het mare to a hom or het stallion?DivineDreams ~ 30908

@DivineDreams I didn’t breed to a snowflake!... should I have?EasternShowBarn

If you breed two het snowflakes together, you have a 1 in 4 chance (25%) of getting a hom snowflake.
If you breed a hom snowflake and a het snowflake together, that increases to 1 in 2 (50%).
However, remember that the foal must also have appy to be considered a snowflake. So it may be homozygous for the gene, but if it doesn't have the appy gene it won't be a snowflake. ((or at least that's how I understand it))Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Also, it's best if you do know that the stallion at least carries snowflake. That way you know there's a chance of getting a hom SF foal.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

If you didnt breed to a snowflake stud, chances are the foal will not be hom snowflake. However it might be her from its mom. So in owner notes make a note that they could be a het snowflake.
In order for snowflake to show the horse must have two copies ie Homozygous.DivineDreams ~ 30908

She is 100% het snowflake...her HOM baby didn’t pass testing so I sold it back to game (which is why you can’t see it in her breeding history)
You have a higher chance of breeding a HOM baby if you breed her with a HOM snowflake male :)♡ ID #23495 ♡

Oh and the baby has to carry a Llp (Appt) gene or snowflake won’t show♡ ID #23495 ♡

@Goobanni hah I wish I would have known this before I bred her :((EasternShowBarn

This is precisely the reason why I dont't breed snowflake, even though it looks lovely. It's just so damned hard to get a line started xDProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

@ObsidianKitsune.... but they are soooooo pretty :D
@EasternShowBarn, you will get there.... and when you see that first snowflake baby that you have bred... it will be worth it :D♡ ID #23495 ♡

Are you sure she's not hom? Since she doesn't have the app genes you don't know what she truly is. But yeah, having snowflake babies is a pain to get right.
Another pitfall is if you breed in other white genes and have w20. You don't have a chance in hell at seeing those little flakes and the breeders club is the only one to confirm it.#4519 -
Ahhh, good point @Bourbon...♡ ID #23495 ♡

It doesn't even have to be white genes. I have one that's leopard. I won't see the snowflake effect until his grandchildren :-/
-
@Bourbon would she then be entered into the breeders club if she was hom?EasternShowBarn

Not without the appa gene also being present. To get into the breeders club they need to be appaloosa AND hom snowflake. A horse could be hom snowflake and not be allowed in the club since it doesn't have the appaloosa gene to express it.
Same with pearl horses, they need to either have two copies of pearl, or a pearl + cream copy to be expressed and allowed into the breeders club.
@DevilsParadise also very frustrating to have a leopard! I get annoyed if I get a grey/pale cream horse with it too. I want to see those little flakies snow 'em under!#4519 -
Teehee. The only time I dont want leopards is when breeding Snowflake!DivineDreams ~ 30908

@Bourbon wait if she’s a Hom snowflake then if she’s bred with a regular appy will it work? Or does she have to be bred with a snowflake whether she is het or Hom?EasternShowBarn

Eastern, a horse MUST be homozygous for snowflake and carry appy to be a snowflake horse. To be homozygous, a horse must get one copy from each parent, so if you breed her to an appy that isn't a SF carrier, the foal would not be SF even if the mum in hom for it.
The thing is, I don't think we know for certain if the mare is hom, we just know that she carries SF so she may be het or hom. She's sadly far too old to gmt appy on to her, so we won't know for sure.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

To get any homozygous gene in a foal, both parents must carry the gene.
-
if you breed her to a hom snowflake hom lp and her foal is not snowflake then she is het snowflake if the foal is snowflake she may still be het but if you keep breeding her to hom sf hom lp if she is hom sf then all of her foals will be snowflake,
