Are you able to make HJ2 ends meet using showing?
-
Lately, I've noticed a few members saying that they don't bother with showing any more and make their HJ2 ends meet by breeding for profit. I know on HJ1 there are many players who make ends meet purely through showing, but I am finding it very difficult to do here. I have thought about this a little bit, and I think it is harder here because horses age twice as fast, but train at the same rate (if you use autotrainer) and show at the same rate. So a HJ2 horse with identical stats to a HJ1 horse will only reach half its potential training points (and likely never reach the highest levels of competition) and will only show in half the number of classes over its lifetime as its HJ1 analogue. This seems like it would make "making a living" through showing on HJ2 more difficult.
Let me be clear that I'm not trying to say that breeding for profit babies shouldn't be a viable way to make ends meet in game, but I do think showing should be just as viable. Personally, I really want to be able to make ends meet through showing alone, and so far it hasn't been working out for me.
Part of this issue may be addressed, but in the meantime this is the reality of the game so we might as well figure out how to make it work.
I am curious to hear what the community thinks about this, so let's discuss. -
Most of my horses are in barns set to auto-show. I have a total of 1773 of them, counting neuters and intacts. My current showing bonus is 156,684 hb's, and my account increases weekly. It isn't yet high enough to finance IV purchase of additional barns yet, but it certainly covers all the breeding and creating I am able to manage. I don't get all my intact horses bred each year, at least in part because I can't always afford to add new barns. I don't to a lot of breeding in the ABL. Most of it is done by hand, or in the pastures. I do send horses to the auction occasionally, but don't often put many up for sale otherwise.
In short, I am making more hajibucks than I spend, and expect to eventually reach the point where I can afford to buy barns with IV's here as well, which will make it easier add stall space so I can breed more foals in a season. I try not to compare the results of this game with those in my HAJ1 account, but just both of them equally.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I am not far from it. But then again, I have 5646 horses right now, and only 952 are intacts, only 390 are mares of breedable age.

Hmm I can appreciate not wanting to compare the two games because they aren't exactly the same, but if we accept that HJ1 is a balanced game in terms of showing mechanics and how they relate to profit etc., it seems HJ2 isn't balanced because the mechanics are largely the same, but the frequency with which relevant events happen has changed.
I don't think it's immediately clear what the effects of the difference between training rates, showing frequencies, and year length are though. I am just hypothesizing.
Maribo, it's good to hear that you are having success. Maybe it's time to tweak my criteria for mares I keep intact. -
Yeah... But looking at my numbers, I kinda feel my stable should be more than paying for itself :P

I have some pasture breeding stock and a lot of stock that's still in barns. If a mare doesn't make the cut as a breeder I keep her as a shower, intact. She is in an auto show barn and gets rotated into a pasture to produce a foal each year. I'm not sure what the difference is in training for gelding but I'm not sure it's big enough, especially with shortened life spans here, to justify snipping and taking away that 1800 hbs (2300 auction - 500 breeding fee) a year that the showbrooders are producing for me. It's a little time consuming to rotate them into the pasture but not too bad.

I seem to do ok and can afford to buy a barn with IVs every other year or so. I am pretty picky on culling though so maybe I don't require as much cash each year because I am yumming through the auction or selling a fair number of critters.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

It's not overly surprising that it may need some tweaks for balancing.

Thanks for tweaking, Ammit :)
