  • I've just been gifted a vivarium with full kit (heat mats, sticks, and lights..ect) but I'm not sure what pet I would like in it. It has a 6" bottom below the doors so turtles or semi aquatic animals are an option. Snakes and spiders are a no no, spiders are scary and I don't want pinkies in my freezer.
  • Maybe a frog or a chameleon? Do you want a pet you can somewhat play with?

  • Snakes are so wonderful though! I got a corn snake a few weeks ago and he's so wonderful and chill. As for the pinkies, I leave them in their bag inside a ziploc just for peace of mind and stick them in the door. Hardly notice them unless I'm going to feed.
Otherwise! I will always vote for leopard geckos. I have a 15 year old male who is really healthy and a dream to hang out with. He likes to go for car rides and meet new people. And he knows my voice and will perk up when I come in the room. So much fun :)
  • I'm not bothered about playing with it. I've heard chameleons can be difficult to look after.

I don't have a shelf on my freezer door and the freezer itself is full of my food so snakes are still a no-no.
  • Frogs are cool. So are anole lizards. They are super easy to take care of and Cheap to get! I used to have them. They're really fun.

  • How do you care for anoles? I have looked at them, and I have always been told they are too advanced for a beginner and newbies like me would just kill them early. Sorry, just had to ask. Have often wanted an anole.
  • Anoles look like tiny dragons, I like it. They're definitely going on the list.
  • Anoles are often sold as beginner reptiles because they are cheap, and actually not hard to care for. Just research what temps and humidity the species you want prefers, and maintain at the proper levels. Feed a variety of appropriate sized insects. They are a good beginner lizard.

Crested Geckos are also a very good beginner reptile. They prefer lower temps than tropical reptiles, so "room temperature" is ideal. They eat fruit and there are several commercial diets you just add water and feed. They can be handled some, which is not advised with anoles.

  • My ex boyfriend's brother used to keep Leopard Geckos, they can be handled and I think he used to feed them with crickets. I'm pretty sure he had some other type of lizard in there with them, but I can't remember what it was now. (This was like 20 years ago)

I also have a couple of friends who have had bearded dragons, but I think they get quite big.
