@divinedreams yes, bright bay and dark wild bay seem to react to DP in a very similar manner

@obsidian silver does strange things and I'm not confident at picking DP in silver bays. Your girl is Hom Sooty though, so she should compare to the third lot of horses I've posted, not the second.

@Cheers, I know for a fact that that girl is het dp because her dad is a het sty liver ;) Looking at this post I realised I should've kept him intact, even though he did paper yellow, just so getting dp bays would be easier.

I'm going to say no DP on him. The DPs seem to have much darker bellies than the plain dark bays.

Paradise I think this guy is het sooty Hom DP. He's really really really red, as you can see. I think your girl is het DP as a result but she could be Hom.

@KolladeeStud I don't like to make calls on foal coat colors unless it's really obvious, but there is certainly DP in 3 different places in his great grandparents so it's not out of the question for him to be carrying it.

Still so confused as to what DP is and how to tell if your horses have it.. I have a couple freaky Fridays.. so they are for sure DP? And I had two dark chestnuts throw a liver.. are all livers DP?
How can you tell hom vs hey DP?

DP stands for dense pheomelanin. It darkens the red pigments on a horse, so you cannot see dp on a black based horse. Although bays do have black as their base, it's also mixed with red so dp effects them.

Freaky Fridays are always hom dp. Hom dp's (in chestnuts) tend to be much darker than het dps, sometimes called "Black Chestnuts" because they look black without actually carrying any black. Keep in mind though that every horse created has a random chance to have dp, so you can get a RS that usually doesn't have it be a liver just by luck.

To tell if a horse is het or hom dp, you basically have to develop an eye for it. Comparing the horse to other known carriers can help determine it's genetic makeup.

Liver is a colour of chestnut that occurs when there are three darkening alleles present. Sooty is a darkening gene, and so is dp (refer to first paragraph). Black livers always have all four copies, whereas "chocolate" livers can have two copies of sooty and one copy of dp, or one copy of sooty and two copies of dp.

In answer to @KAMRanch questions~

1.) DP is short for "Dense Pheomelanin", it effects the red pigment in the hair darkening them.

2.) All Freaky Fridays are hom DP.

3.) Livers always carry at least one copy of DP. To be a liver chestnut they need to have three out of four darkening genes, four darkening genes produces a black liver chestnut.

4.) Liver Chestnut is easy, if they're very dark and only have one copy of Sooty, they're most likely hom DP, if they are very dark and have two copies of Sooty they are het DP. If they're almost or are black then they're hom DP and hom Sooty.

Ammit has made a page on the genetic guide which gives you a quick visual run down but it's a lot of training the eye, crossing the right horses to confirm suspicions and guess work.
