Frosted Horse?
  • I have this appaloosa horse and she looks like she's covered in frost all over her body except not on her thigh. What genes are responsible for this?

  • That is varnish. Its an appaloosa trait. It gradually whites out your horse over its years wielding very pretty results. I intentionally breed Appaloosas with lots of varnish.

  • Just to give some examples.

This girl used to be dark grey with light varnish when I first got her. Checked after she aged up this season and got surprise butt spots that were previously hidden under her dark coat.

This girl had light patches of color when I first got her. The varnish has taken those away but shes still pretty.

Varnish can go either way. If its something you fancy, I know there are several app lovers on the forum willing to help.

  • Varnish is genetic but the genes are hidden in game, so you are best off breeding varnished horses together if you like the trait.

Snowflake is a version of varnishing. Check out the Snowflake Breeders Club for examples of this more extreme version of varnishing--white spots instead of the regular frosted/roaned effect that slowly take over the coat.

Snowflake only shows if the horse is homozygous for the hidden gene AND Appaloosa, but it does randomly occur in regular creates in the game. If you like the look of it, you can find someone with a Snowflake stallion that would be willing to let you breed or buy straws and you can get snowflakes from that two generations down.
  • The gene responsible for the 'frosting" is the Lp gene...
The Lp gene or TRMP1 gene was named the "Leopard complex" when Appy genetics were still a bit of a mystery.
The Lp/TRMP1 gene...or the "Appaloosa" gene is the gene that gives the breed its markings.
Your mare is LpLp or homozygosous for the Appaloosa gene. This is giving her a frosted/varnish roan appearance..
When you start throwing in the PATN1 or PATN2 genes, thats when you get the spotted or solid blankets and the variety of blanket sizes...
    Basically..it kinda goes like this..
    Homo Appaloosa= LpLp

    2 Brown Cow

    image
    1 homo app Buckskin

To get an appaloosa coat pattern, or more of one, you need to add the PATN 1 gene/ECA3P..( or 2). A PATN 1gene is needed in combination with the Lp gene to get an appy coat pattern.. If a horse has NO Lp..( ie lplp) but 2 PATN1..it won't display an appaloosa coat pattern..because you need the Lp gene to produce the colour.
Here is an LpLp horse ( like yours) but this horse has 1 - PATN 1 gene aswell ( LpLp PATN1 patn1).. This PATN1 gene gives it the large white blanket

    1 LpLp Homo Brown App

Now if you continue and add another PATN1 gene.. ( LpLp PATN1 PATN1) The white pattern would be even larger..like this

    1 Dream LpLpP1P1 brown

Now, if we TAKE AWAY one of the Lp ( leopard complex genes) So a horse would be Lplp or heterozygosous .It would look something like this..She looks very similar to your mare.. But she only has 1 Lp gene..She's heterozygosus for the Leopard Complex

    WS Chocolate Chip F1

Then, we'll add 1 PATN 1 gene, to give a bit more colour
    image
    WS Spark F1

    And then finally, we take the heterozygosous Lp and give it 2 PATN 1 genes ( homozygosous PATN 1) A horse may look something like this;

    3 WS Firey Eclipse

Appaloosa coat colour genetics is pretty complicated and range of coat patterns is extensive..Geez I type too much.. I hope this helps a bit..

This link to the Lp/ TRMP1 gene in Ammits genetic guide for the game may be very helpful in explaining it:

And heres the link to the ECA3P/ PATN gene that Ammit has provided in the game's genetic guide.
