Brown Rules Question.
  • How many darkening genes are required for a horse to activate the brown gene?

    And DP counts right?

  • What is needed to have a brown horse is E? aAt or AtAt. Sooty and DP will make the coat darker, but a horse can be brown without either of them.

    Here's a non-sooty W1 Ata brown.

    Here's a homozygous sooty homozygous At brown horse. The effect of At is to restrict the movement of black pigment to the points (A's function). The movement is not as held back when two copies of At are present, hence it is fairly light even with SstySsty. There's also some varnishing and brindle going on.

  • The reason I ask... Is I have two Homozygous Brown mares, and their colour name is Bay.

    Also how many darkening genes for a Sable Champagne?

  • @Sandy

    Homozygous brown with no sooty is phenotypically bay and is color named Bay despite the presence of the brown allele.

    @divine--

    Het brown with recessive Agouti (Ata or aAt) (and of course E) is always "brown" regardless of whether there are sooty genes or not.

    Hom brown requires at least one darkening allele according to my research. Any darkening gene will do--DP, Ssty, S+.
  • Divine, the same appears to be true for brown with champagne--either het brown or Hom brown with at least one darkening gene will give you sable champagne. Hom brown with no darkening genes is Amber.
  • @Cheers: Thanks for that correction. I don't do a lot of specific breeding for brown, although I have a fair number of horses that carry it.
