Comparison Testing -What's your Preferred Method?
-
So, I'm still woefully inundated with way more 2G boys than I have room for. After already culling based on other criteria, all I'm really left with is to just bite the bullet and start comparison testing.
But I don't really know where to start. Is it better to test offspring to sire, or to a benchmark stallion? (How do you even decide on a benchmark stallion?). Is it even worth comparing to sire if the offspring has papered higher than the sire?
Ideally I would compare all of them to both sire and horses of the same gen,and keep what comes out best, but since it costs me $8K a test, I can't really afford to do that.
What does everyone recommend is a good starting point?
-
I would compare them to their sire if possible.
That way you know they are improving their line.
Also if it gets down to it... Compare them to each other.DivineDreams ~ 30908

What Divine said.

How many have you narrowed it down to? Maybe compare two, then take best then compare to next, then so forth until all are tested? Of they're equal, then if you compare to one then it's comparing to both. Although they can be different within a range so it makes it hard.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

I compared to each other. But now i have an A papered 2nd gen i compare everything to him.. anything that doesnt make it gets snipped or if its really pretty will go up for public studBreeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.
Also breeder of mushroom, watercolour, chinchilla, splash m, wrong warp and thunderstruck.
Horses generally always available.
PM me for any enquiries. -
If you don't have a benchmark yet, I would probably follow this method:
Get a piece of paper and list all of your colts with a couple lines between each one.
If you have an ExPerf or ExPro foundation, I would compare them to him rather than to their sire. Go down the list. Mark down the results on your list.
As soon as you get an AGA, snip any inferior colts.
As soon as you get a Superior, snip any AGA colts and quit comparing to the Foundation--compare everything remaining to the Superior colt. If you get a colt that is superior to that colt, start comparing to it.
The theory here is that you are snipping everything that is inferior to your best colt.
At the moment I only have B Gen 2 colts but I'm really hoping to get an A this season. Once I do, all colts will have to compare AGA, and gen 3s will have to be Superior.Thanked by 1ellieroseek -
Oh--and if you write it down like I've suggested, you can choose to test your favorite foals first. With any luck you will get a superior colt early and be able to snip whatever you're not in love with.
-
So I jumped the gun a bit earlier and compared a small handful that were from the same sire to that sire.
That sire happens to be an ExPro foundation, so I can still follow the method you gave me Cheers.
I tested about 4 or 5, all were AGA except one, who was inferior (Which was the one I really liked, of course!).
Okay, so I should compare the rest to the ExPro stud, even if they're not by him?
-
Look, I would because you know he's about 5% better than a regular PF. But it's up to you. I certainly wouldn't compare anyone to anything less than a PF quality.
-
What I do, especially if I have a stallion with a lot of sons (he's been in the pasture full of mares, usually), is to start by snipping any that paper lower than the sire. Then I start comparing the rest to him. I geld any that test worse than or about as good as the sire. When I get one that is superior to the sire, I make him the one the rest of the sons get compared to. I geld any that test worse than this brother, and keep any that test about as good as he is. If, and this does happen, I get another equally papered son that is superior to that one, then this second son becomes the test point and anything worse than he is gets gelded.
It gets easier if you have at least one colt that papers better than the sire. Anything that papers lower than this one gets snipped, and I only have to compare equally papered brothers to him. Once again, there may be some with the same paper level that test superior to the rest.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

What I did this season is,
Test the colt to his stud.
Then test against his brother or runner up. -
When you are comparing brother to brother of equal papering but different PT scores. How often does the lower PT colt test superior to his higher PT brother? Not exact how often. But does it happen with enough frequency that you can't use the lower PTs to weed out the inferior without laying out 8000 for the comparison test? e.g. I have a young stallion who has tested AGA his rank special sire. All his brothers are lower PTs, some much lower. Will I still need to compare them all to my AGA?
-
PT has nothing to do with breeding ability. They can be the lowest PT score and still be the best breeder. Don't look at PT for breeding ability.
-
That being said. If I have two boys who compare AGA each other I will keep the lowest PT score for breeding and alter the higher PT boy to put in my show string.Thanked by 1Wytchmore

I have an A papered colt who tested superior to his sire. Is it safe to snip his B papered brothers without comparing them to him? Until another A papered brother comes along. Or do you comparison test everyone to him regardless?
-
If your going to keep the A papered boy for breeding and you have no plans to use the B papered boy, yes I wouldn't bother with comparing him. I would just snip him and put him in the show herd.Thanked by 1SeekingSerenity
