Profit
-
I've been curious about the profit of a horse. Does anyone use it to cull with? What does the + or - inside the brackets mean? I have used a few times.
-
@RobbinsRoost, to be honest, I'm not sure. What I could reason is that profit is the number resulting from the (hbs earned in show) - (hbs required for entering show) in which a positive (+) green number is a horse that earned more hbs than it cost to enter and a negative (-) red number is a horse that does not earn more hbs than it costs. I think. Hopefully someone more experience like Confluence, Sandy, or Cheers could pop in.
I do know that I have never used profit to cull a horse. I typically cull horses when they are young and haven't been shown yet. I look at the Total Points category. If a horse has more than 100 points at six-ten years old, I keep said horse. Points help build a bigger show bonus and a bigger show bonus means more hbs to play with.
I got a little distracted but I hope that helps. :) -
Profit relates directly to the cost to enter a show and the prize money earned. It does not take into account any hbs earned from the show bonus, which is the primary way your horses make you money. A horse might lose several hundred hbs over its lifetime in show entry fees but earn tens of thousands of hbs in show bonus.
How does this work?
Every horse that enters a show pays an entry fee, just like real life.
The horses that place in the middle of the class are likely to get close to making their entry fee back and make a medium number of points.. The horses at the top make back more than their entry fee and also earn a lot of points. The horses at the bottom lose some money but still earn a few points. The horse at the very bottom not only loses their entry fee but also doesn't gain any points.
The total points that your horses own divided by 3/4 is about what your show bonus is per week (divided again by 7 to get your daily payment).
So let's take this horse I personally own.
Freaky Frique 3
He's got 80 points and he's made a loss of 141 hbs. He's only 4 years old, he has a decent PT at 10.7 so he will keep training and moving up the levels until he's at least 11 years old probably. He's placed last or next to last in his last 4 shows but he's also moving up show levels. Previously he's placed towards the middle or even at the top of his class, he's just in a bad spot right now. He will grow out of it.
In the mean time, his 80 points means he's earning me 60hbs a week. That means that in 3 weeks of me owning him, he's made up his entire loss so far and actually made me a small profit. If he does well in classes at the upper levels, he will make huge points gains and will make me even more hbs. So while his profit/loss record doesn't look good, he's actually a great addition to my show herd and will probably end up making me a lot of money over time. -
If any of that doesn't make sense please ask questions. I'm a little low on sleep and caffeine this morning.

Thank you for asking this question and thanks to everyone who explained it. I was confused on this, too

I do have another small question...
The + or - inside the ( ). What does that mean? From what I'm observing, it's telling you that the horse is gaining or losing points/profits.....? -
The + means the horse has made profit (which only takes into consideration show entry fees and show winnings, not points) and the - means it has lost money overall.Thanked by 1Ritsika
