That link explains how to get one. Basically, horses get points from being shown and doing well. All but the last place get points, so it's a good idea to show everything! At about 3am every day, you get a certain amount of money based on the total number of points all of your horses have in your barn.

There are two ways of creating embryos, actually. One is to use a straw and and egg, then implant the embryo into a surrogate mare. This way costs 500 hbs to pull the straw, 3k to collect the egg, 2k to create the embryo, and 4k to implant it.

The second way is to use a straw on a mare on the Advanced Breeding Lab's Create Embryo page. The resulting embryo is immediately harvested by the Lab and put in cold storage to be implanted later. This method costs 8k plus the implantation fee of 4k.

As you can see, embryos are a very expensive way of creating foals.
