@Waldgraf Framed For The Crime came from a White 2 Herd Helper someone shared on the forum. I was so nervous when I sent him through breeding advice, but I bit the bullet and did it for clean breedings sake. Luckily he passed. He lacks in Performance Rating but maybe he'll pass his genes down to his foals.

@BelmontFleetwood Thanks most of them are geldings or spayed mares but I love them all they make beautiful show horses. You'll get there just keep working at it.

@Belmont--I know! My favorite Frame I own is the last one, Milk and Honey. But I think that's because I like the contrast of the black base and the crispness of her white patterning...

But then I like the speckled edges you can get with W8 and Frame. And the really finely serrated edges on the Macchiatos with frame. And the sort of wispy effect you can sometimes get with W2 and frame....

I like a fair amount of Frame in my breeding herd but I try to keep it strictly in my girls, never my boys, so I can breed without worrying about any lethal white babies from Frame at least!

What I try to do with my frame breedings at the moment is I'm trying to get hom spash, het frame. I'll mix frame in with my other lines, like macchiato and kitw8, but I prefer it with splash. Dark backgrounds help show it off and I am falling in love with silver blacks/grullos/blue roans. So there'll be more of those in my herd for sure!

@Cheers very true, but if the stallion carries Frame and the mare doesn't, can it still result in a Lethal White baby? Or will there be no problem?

There shouldn't be a problem with lethal whites unless you're mixing kit genes together, or get a hom frame.

I'm basically trying to get a basic understanding of common genetics because I'm headed to Indianapolis, Indiana in October for the National FFA Convention for Horse Evaluation and we never know what's going to be on the team activity or anything, so our coach told us to study basic genetics. So then if there's a genetics question I'll probably have a mostly correct answer.

@Belmont--as long as only one parent has Frame you're safe on that. As Obsidian said, you could still potentially get a kit lethal white depending on what you're crossing, but Frame is only lethal when it's homozygous.

Even if you were breeding 2 heterozygous Frames together, there's only a 1/4 chance the foal would be homozygous, so plenty of people take the risk. Just remember that if you're using Freaky Fridays, they are homozygous for Frame already so will always pass on a copy.

Random side note--Hidalgo was on tv the other day and my husband and I caught the end of it. He knows I play this game and he was asking what pattern the horse had.

If you remember, he's a chestnut with blue eyes and lots of white on him. I was guessing Frame/Overo but I don't really know anything about horse color pattern genetics in real life (I think I've got base colors sort of down, but patterns other than obvious Appaloosa are a little beyond me). Does anyone happen to know what the patterns on the horse that played Hidalgo are likely to be?

I know multiple horses were used and the used airbrush makeup on the "extra" Hidalgos to make them all sort of match, though I love that sometimes he's quite obviously a QH type and others he's really obviously an Arabian....

The whole QH/Arab thing happened with the Black Stallion TV Series which I have all the seasons on DVD. In scenes where he runs hes obviously and Arabian as is tail is flying high but for close ups and all they use a QH, thinking no one will notice the changes.

Funny how I just got this herd helper:

Rank 2: Heterozygous Frame
All horses will be heterozygous(OlwO) for the frame gene. All base colors are possible, but the frame gene may be hard to see. Horses might also have other patterns.
