ISO Brood Mares!
  • I have a stallion that might have DP and I want to test if he does so I'm looking for any chestnut or palomino mares that are hom sooty. I would prefer 2G mares but any generation is fine. I don't have a very good eye for DP yet but for anyone who does here is the stallion ...image

  • This is my Silver Black upcoming stallion.... I really think your guy has dp!

  • DP only affects the color of red hairs, not black, so there is no way to tell simply by looking at this boy that he does or does not have DP. Because both of his parents are black, it is hard to tell where the DP might come from. However, going through this stallion's father's offspring, there are a few suspiciously dark silver bay foals. Horses that are distinctly darker than their siblings with the same genetics.

I don't have any double sooty red based gen 2 mares but I think I may create some today if there is a relevant herd helper floating around just to see what I get. Since this guy is EE, all his foals will be black or bay, but I have a thing for DP bay so I think I will be able to spot it if I see it!
  • @Foxwood DP doesn't have an effect on a black horse so just looking at him would give you no indication of he does or not. His parents are black as well, so no help there. He's EE so breeding him to a chestnut or palomino will only give you black or bay or buckskin foals. The bay foals could tell you if he's DP if you have a good eye but it's a long shot.
  • @DivineDreams I have never seem eyes that dark! Hahahahaha

@Cheers and @kisababy He actually did have a colt that I think has DP. The colts dam does not have DP so im trying to figure out if his sire aka Bright Vegas Lights has DP becasue if he does then im almost positive that his colt does also. I'll post a link to the colt below image

  • To make matters easy, this mare is almost identical to your colt. She's a known het dp, because her dad is hom dp het sty.

  • I am 100% confident your stallion carries DP. I am 90% confident his father is who he got it from.

I bred Bright Vegas Lights to 11 homozygous sooty bay mares. I got at least 2 Het DP homozygous sooty bay foals.

    This one is DP

And this is my homozygous DP sooty bay boy. You can see how super dark he is.

Hope this helps! I wasn't confident about your colt you posted because the splash is covering his belly and I find the belly is usually the give away for me with DP in bays.
