Benefit Of Gelding?
  • I noticed that a lot of people will geld stallions that don't fit into their breeding program and instead add them to their show string. Does gelding a horse make it better at showing? If not then why not just leave them a stallion but not breed them?
Thanks in advanced for any awnsers!
  • Gelding or spaying greatly increases the gain a horse gets from training, essentially making it a better show horse.

  • I have an intact Perfect Foundation mare who adds 8 points to her show score with every training, and I have a neutered Perfect Foundation gelding who also adds 8 points to his show score with every training. The difference between the training of both of them, based on my early experience in HaJ 1when I had to pay close attention to such matters, is that the mare will level off when she turns 9 and the gelding will level off when he turns 10, thus gaining an additional game year of training and the potential of leveling off at a higher Level Grade than the mare.

So far as I know, this is the training advantage that neutering a horse gives you.

  • That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure before I went and gelded a bunch of stallions for no reason :) Thanks again @Timber @SandycreekFarm
