Cushings in horses?
  • What are the signs that my friends mare could have cushings? She never lost her winter coat really? She gets 10% sweet feed once every other day. She is out on pasture 24/7 with access to a run in shed. Fresh water everyday.

    I am thinking cushings.
  • Usually older horses.

    Long curly coat, delayed shedding
Fatty deposits in crest and tail head
    Increased incidence of founder
    Lethargy, lack of stamina/energy etc
    Abnormal sweating
    Infertility (not applicable here!)
Increased drinking and urination (hard to assess in a 24/7 turn out situation)
    Neurological changes, especially blindness
Infections that keep coming back or that the horse should be able to fight off on its own but doesn't.

Research has shown that up to 80% of Cushinoid horses have abnormal coats, either long and curly or delayed shedding or both. Coat changes are usually more subtle on horses, while ponies seem more likely to get the classic curly long coat. Coat changes tend to slowly become more profound over several years. Abnormally long coats and delayed shedding that is not associated with environmental or nutritional factors is most likely to be caused by PPID (Cushings) so your friend probably needs to call the vet.
  • Hi, I've looked after a few cushings horses :)
Diagnosing cushings isn't so easy but if she is normally looses her coat quickly it could be a sign that something isn't right metabolically or even circulatory.
All the ponies I've helped with were prone to cresty necks and pot bellies, so it's best to keep an eye out for changes in weight and muscling. Lameness is also commonly associated. If concerned it is best to simply contact a vet with any questions ;)
  • My moms friend use to have a horse with cushings and she use to shave her horse every summer
  • She should definitely have the vet out to check her.
And if its hot where she lives I would definitely recommend she body clips her.
  • My old cob had it and needed to be clipped all year. He had a thick coat that in the summer would shed (if you pulled at it) but look as though he wasn't actually losing any, hence having to clip him. Id get the vet out just in case
I'm trying and having fun doing it.
  • We have an appointment. Her mare is between 15 and 18 years old. She has foundered multiple times. She shredded easy last spring but this year her body doesn't seem to want to let lose of her winter coat. She does brush her and some comes out.
  • Yeah sounds like theres something up. Even if its not cushings. Glad the vet is coming to look at her
