Is Showing Ability Different Than PT
  • From what I understand, on the breeding side of things, Breeding Advice and Breeding Inspection are indicators of the horse's breeding abilities. Horses that are inspected at a higher level / pass BA or SBA are better at breeding than ones that don't.

However, unless I'm mistaken, a horse's Performance Test Grade indicates how well a horse trains and how far in the showing levels they can advance. A horse with a higher PT can show at higher level shows with bigger awards.

Does this mean it also indicates how successful a horse will be at showing? Or, is that a separate (and hidden) factor? For example, can one horse with a PT of 10.5 be an excellent shower (performs well and place higher in a class) while another horse with a PT of 10.5 is a bad shower?

This question came up because I just bred the gelding below. The stud is a high PT that I purposeful use to pasture breed my show string. The mare failed BA/SBA and papered at "failed" so I assumed the foal wouldn't be a decent shower. However, he PTed at 10.7 and consistent. Did I just luck out and produce a good show horse, despite the mare's lack of quality? Or, could the foal still be a dud, even though he might progress quickly through the levels?

  • The mare failed breeding ability not showing so she to could make a good show horse :D

  • PT determines how much a horse will add to its show score when it is trained, since the starting score is random, there is an element of luck involved in whether a horse gets good scores. There is another major element of luck in the actual results of any show from the other horses in it. Your horse could have the highest score possible before leveling up, but if there are inconsistent horses whose scores swing up in the show, your horse could place poorly. Conversely, your horse might only have a mediocre score for that level, but if it is up against horses who just advanced to that level, it could place first. There is no way to predict actual show performance. The only way to find out is to give the horse several game years of training and showing to see.

  • To answer your question about this specific foal, you should understand that almost everything in this game has a significant amount of randomness built in. This means, for breeding ability, as an example, each parent of a foal has a range of possible contributions to the breeding and showing abilities of that foal. Where on that range the contribution comes from is determined by a random selection, so sometimes a stallion or a mare will contribute from the low end of its range, at other times the contribution may come from the middle or the top end of the range.

In the case of this foal, you bred an A papered 6th generation stallion to an unpapered Foundation mare who subsequently was neutered by Breeding Advice. This tells me that she was probably a very low C mare or could even have failed her papering test. I would guess that she is probably a low C. The sire's Average Foal PT is 10.8, so I would guess that this baby, with his 10.7 PT score, received contributions to his showing ability from near the top of both parents' possible contributions to his score.

He was neutered by Breeding Advice, which is normal, especially when the difference in quality between the stallion and the mare is so great. A papers are the next to the highest possible. Breeding a high generation stallion to a foundation mares is a viable strategy for producing good show horses, and in this case it worked out. Given luck in the classes this baby is entered in as he ages and trains, he should make a decent show horse.

Based on his PT score, he has the ability to be showing in Level 7 World, in the higher reaches of the Hunt and Jump showing world. It will take him several game years of training to hit his stride, but I would recommend giving him a name and hanging on to him for the probability that he will eventually be adding significantly to your showing bonus.
