Tattoos?
  • I just got my upgrade and I'm wondering how tattoos work and how to get one for my horses?

That is one of my personal fillies, see how she has BB on her shoulder that is how I know she was bred by me.
    Also go to

  • Do I just draw it? I tried that but nothing shows up on the draw pad :( I want one so bad haha I love yours!
  • By the way that horse is stunning!!
  • You get a template and you pick colors to draw it

  • Okay so if you click "Tattoo Registry" under Stable Management on the sidebar you will navigate to the tattoo page. The little blurb at the top actually does a pretty good job of explaining tattoos, but I'll try to mention some highlights/what makes tattoos so useful.

A lot of people use tattoos like people use brands in real life: to mark horses they have bred. Here's an example:

You can see Abbey Road's tattoo on the horse's hip. If you put a tattoo on your horses, people can tell at a glance that a certain horse came from your barn. (I specifically chose AR's brand to show because it is one that I find very easily recognizable.) Plus, they can look pretty cool.

One huge advantage that tattoos have is that they can be searched for on the "Search Horses" page. Here's one of my mares:

If you go to her page and scroll down towards the bottom, you will see a Somatic Tattoos section. Here, there is a list of all the tattoos currently on that horse. If you type "eF Sooty+" into the horse search (under Tattoo Name) you can see that that mare comes up. The usefulness of tattoos lies in the fact that you can essentially create your own search criteria for the horse search...which makes sorting through and keeping track of certain types of horses much, much easier. S+ can actually be searched for using the "Base Color" section of the horse search, but it is hard to do unless the horses you're looking for are gene tested and S+S+. I also keep track of all of my DP horses with a tattoo since that gene cannot be searched for. To give you an idea of more types of criteria that are useful to have as tattoos, here are mine: "Entropic Force Bred", "eF Second Generation", "eF Third Generation", "eF Fourth Generation", "eF Fifth Generation", "eF Sooty+", and "eF Dense Pheomelanin". I have generation tattoos for 2G+ since the horse search can only distinguish between "foundation" and "lined".

Oh and it's worth noting that you don't need to draw a picture for a tattoo...you can leave that blank if you like. I don't like too many tattoos on a single horse page, so I left my S+ and DP tattoos picture-less. I like having the generation tattoos visible so I can tell from the thumbnail pic of a horse what gen it is.
  • Here are some basic instructions for drawing tattoos.

On the left side of the Tattoo Editor is the drawing pad. It is 25 pixels by 25 pixels. As you can see from these numbers, the image you draw needs to be fairly small and simple. Below the box you will find a button to reset the pad to blank (erasing everything in it at one click), a drop down box with some filters that can be applied, though I've never used any of them, so I can't tell you what they do. Then there is a small colored square. It's default color is black. Clicking on it will open up a tool that allows you to change colors.

On the right side are the drawing tools. The default selection is the brush. It will make one pixel marks on the drawing pad where you place your cursor and click. These marks will be the color that has been selected, and the range is enormous. The middle tool is the eraser, which will remove one pixel at a time from the drawing, allowing you to remove errors on spot at a time. On the right is a dropper, which will sample any color you select in your drawing so that you can add that color someplace where you haven't drawn yet. You can enlarge the area covered with one click by changing the number in the box on the left of the brush or eraser tool controls. The blue line gives an indication of the size you have selected. I pixel is the default (hence my size indications above). Entering 2 will allow you to color a square that is 2 pixels by 2 pixels, and so on.
Below are two buttons that allow you to change from a square brush to a circular brush. The circular brush will only work for brush sizes larger than 1.

Under the draw pad is a long box that allows you to see what your design will look like in its actual size, not the magnified pixel display of the drawing pad. On the left you will see the previously saved work. On the right you will see what you are currently working on. Save your work often by clicking on the Save Your Work button, even if you aren't done yet, so that nothing gets lost.

Large square tattoos in ultra-bright colors will look better in the corners of the horse image than they do on the horse. Designs that look more like traditional brands look better on the horses. At least that is the opinion of some of us, including me.
