Checking dp
-
I've heard people mention that you can check if a horse has dp in the GMT lab, and I was just wondering if that costs a GMT token? When you choose a horse and click "modify this horse", are you automatically charged, or are you able to leave the page later without purchasing a gene modification/spending a token? I only have one GMT token and haven't decided how to spend it, but I want to check a couple horses for dp first - is that possible?
Thanks! -
DP costs 10 tokens per allele, so if you only have one GMT, it won't charge you because you can't afford it.
Edit: if you post the horse, people can help you determine if it's a DP carrier by the coat!Thanked by 1Ravenbrook -
To answer your specific question about the gene lab, you are only charged if you actually click the button that activates the change to the horse's gene set or gender. So, selecting a horse to modify and entering the lab does not commit you to actually spending a GMT.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

DP (KP, and GP)will show a question mark on both genes (mom and dads) regardless of whether the horse has DP or not, since it's a hidden gene. Using just the one token method to try and use the GMT lab to see if the horse as a hidden gene won't work.Thanked by 1Ravenbrook

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you deardiamond, Sandycreek, and Confluence!

The one token method actually does work in some circumstances, especially with foundations. If a foundation already has DP on that allele, you will not see the option to change ? to ?. It will just say that no edits are available for this gene. You can put DP on any GMTable foundation with no restrictions, so if you don't see the option to edit then you know that horse must have DP.
It's harder with lined horses, because if you don't have the option to change ? to ?, it could mean that the foal already has DP for that allele or it could mean that the parent doesn't have DP to give to the foal in the first place.Thanked by 1Ravenbrook -
For example here is a King's Ransom mare that I own. She is still GMTable and I can view her in the GMT lab. However, when I click on her DP alleles I do not have the option to edit either one of them. I can't change ? to ?, it just says that no edits are available for this gene. Now, the only reason why I wouldn't be able to add DP onto a GMTable foundation is if the horse already has DP on that allele. Since I can't add DP to either one of her alleles, that means that she's already hom DP.

This is the message I get when I click on either one of her DP alleles in the GMT lab.
Editing Options
Your horse has the ? allele for this Dense Pheomelanin gene.
Dense Pheomelanin is an untestable gene. You will always see the option to modify on an untestable gene but will only be charged if that horse does not already have that gene. No edits are available for this gene.Thanked by 1Ravenbrook -
Thank you! I found out a couple of mine have a surprise DP allele, including this mare that I was close to selling, glad I found out!

I'm not sure if the game is supposed to show you the option to edit a DP allele even if the horse already has DP on that allele, because that's what the description on the GMT page makes it sound like. But in reality, it doesn't show you the option and it will not give you the option to change a hidden gene if the horse already has it. Or, for lined horses, not having the option to edit a hidden gene could mean that the parent doesn't have a copy of that gene to give to the foal.
