Stallion Quality Control Question
  • http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=770145

I'm not sure what to do with this stallion. A good rule of thumb I remember reading on here was if a horses APFT is not at least 0.3 better than their own PT they are under producing. This boy's APFT is lower than his own PT score. Is it worth keeping him intact to make pasture babies with? I have two other 1 gen studs so if I snipped him it wouldn't be terrible. I haven't really had to implement quality controls on stallions I've been using yet (mostly snipping foals) so I'm not confident I'm making the right call on gelding him.

  • Going through his foals he has some really nice babies. He doesn't really have enough foals to make a harsh judgement yet so I'd probably keep him intact for now. Give him another season in pasture, if he tanks then I'd snip.

  • PT has nothing to do with breeding ability. The rule regarding AFPT is that an AFPT of at least 0.3 better than their PARENT's AFPT is good progress in the generations. Never look at a breeder's PT for anything regarding breeding ability.
