Culling Advice (for colts, papered mares, potential show stock)
  • Ok it seems like I've been posting an awful lot so sorry for all the activity. I just have many questions and much excitement :)

So I think some culling is very straightforward...I don't keep any C colts by a C stud, or B colts by a B stud...but it seems things get much more complicated when you break into A colts. This season I bred this boy:
    http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=202523
He was a pleasant surprise with the KittoKitto and the CprlCprl (I didn't realize his dam was a carrier). Plus he got his dam's frame...but he papered A and his sire is also an A. To try to figure out if he is good enough quality to hang around, I compared him to my other A colt, Muted Cacophony: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=199439
MC is a 3rd gen A, so he is clearly superior to his sire (2nd gen B). I figured if the new colt was superior to MC, then he's a 4th gen A that is superior to a 3rd gen A and is worth keeping intact. He did turn out to be superior to MC. I was wondering how you guys make decisions like this and if you would keep this colt intact. (FYI I cannot compare him to his sire because I do not own him.)

The other thing I need some help with is mares. Do you use papering to cull? Do you always snip if a mare papers the same as her dam? If you do snip a mare, do you then go in and snip all her offspring? These are the two mares that I'm not sure what to do with:
    http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=127198
http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=141624 (note that this mare is the dam of the colt in question above - if you decided to alter her, would you alter him too?)

Finally, how do you decide which neutered stock to keep around? Do you have a cutoff for PT (maybe generation based)?

    Much appreciated guys :)
  • I am little different on snipping Foundation stallions. I test breed all my 'C' papered Foundations before gelding. My reason for this, is I have had two Foundation stallions that have compared, 'Worse' than my other Foundations, but both of them that are producing a very high percentage of Profit offspring. More so than the others, so I snipped the 'Better' Foundation stallions. As for the 'B' and 'A' papered offspring, if they Compare, 'As Good As, or Superior' to their sire, then I give them a chance in the breeding shed before gelding. But that is just my testing practices. I think most players automatically geld if they paper lower than the sire.

Mares, if they pass Strict Mare, then I try breeding them first before spaying. If I don't like the color, I spay and show.

I keep my neutered stock around until they show a continued decline in the show ring.

I am still new enough, I am just in the testing stages of breeding though. Some of the other players that have been playing longer than I have, may have better advice for you.
  • I would keep the colt IF he has the genes/patterns you really want to breed for. I kinda get the impression that *star status is difficult to achieve even by 4th generation.

Mares I haven't come up with a good plan yet... I am trying a showing based culling system under the assumption that Mares who pass SAT but are terrible showers must also be terrible breeders. Then I guess I will test breed everything left and see how they produce.

  • Showing and Breeding have nothing to do in common, so if the mare passes SAT, does not mean she is a terrible breeder. Same as the PT score of the horse does not mean she is a terrible breeder. Don't even think of them together, and you will do better.
  • I keep colts based on comparisons more so than papers, although yes I do expect a gen2 to be at least B, and a 3rd gen to be at least an A. I like to see Stars by 5th gen. But I keep some B papered gen2's if sired by a B papered horse, as long as they are superior.

For mares, I don't paper foundations as I think it's pointless. But I expect gen2's to be Red, and gen3's to be Blue. However I don't spay/geld the red gen3 mares foals unless they look really bad. I expect Golds by 6th gen at this stage. I don't really take much notice of PT except on foals to get an idea on how a mare is producing
