Horse Leveled Off?
  • Hi everyone! I'm new to this server and play on HJ1 as PinkFlamingo. I am wondering about one of my horses I just created yesterday. I did one round of training on him, and on his page it says his training has leveled off. Does this mean he can't gain anymore from training? Is he a show prospect dud? Here's the link to his page for you all to see: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=199982

  • It does indeed mean that he is definitely not a showing prospect. I'd guess he has a PT score of no more than 1 or 2 at the very most, and will only gain very small fractions of a point with training throughout his life. However, he may turn out to be a good foundation sire, since showing ability and breeding ability are two entirely separate numbers. I had a mare in H&J 1 with a PT score of 2.3 or so. She papered Red. *G*

  • Thanks SandyCreek! I guess I will maybe hold on yo him and see how he does at stud. Bummer! Hoping to build up a show string of horses!
  • On the subject of leveling off, is it controlled by age at all? Let's say you have a horse that has a high PT but doesn't start training until he is 10. Assuming that he doesn't die first (which is potentially a pretty big assumption), can he still reach his max score? Another way to think of what I'm asking is imagine we have two completely identical horses. Say the first one is trained every single week and maxes out at age 5. If the second one is trained every other week, will he max out at age 10?

I suspect that the answer is that both PT and age play a role. My guess is a low PT means low potential (horse will level off at a lower score). But at some age horses become likely to level off (maybe it is like the death system). Look at these two mares with identical PTs:

This mare sat in the rescue for awhile before I picked her up. She leveled off without breaking 50 as a high score. She is 11 years old.

(I borrowed this one from you, SandyCreek :) )
I am guessing this mare has been trained regularly since birth. She is at a high score of 67 and has still not leveled off. She is 6 y/o.

I have this 5 y/o made who I bred pt'd at 10.6 and Is a flawless show mare whom has 61 points and a profit of 64 just in year 20 she has earned 14 points

  • Generally speaking, horses level off about the age of their PT score without decimal places. Horses with a PT of 9.? will level off at 9; those with a PT of 10.? at 10. However, higher than that, they start slowing down in the increasing their show scores rather rapidly, and although they don't show as "Leveled Off," they will quickly only be gaining fractions of a point each week.

There is a difference between training score points and show points. They are not the same thing. Training score points are the ones that increase with training and are the score a horse is given when it is shown. Show points are assigned depending on where a horse places in the class, with the highest number awarded to the horse that comes in first and the 0 to the horse that comes in last. It is these show points that are accumulated by each horse, reported on their Horse Info page, both as a life total and as a yearly total. These are the points that contribute to your weekly showing bonus.

Here is the section for one of my horses that shows how Show Points are reported:
    Level: Green O/F
    Grade: Local
    Training: Trained For Week
    Showing Style: Hunter
    Earnings this year: 0 hb's
    Points this year: 0
    Total earnings: 7 hb's
    Total points: 1
    Profit: 0

Here is the record of the last show he was entered in showing the points that were awarded to the horses in that particular class:
