Who uses strict mare advice?
-
I was just wondering if most level 5 users make use of strict mare advice. It seems it would definitely increase your herd quality long-term, but do people find that it is too ruthless and you end up with a very small amount of mares at the end?
I haven't personally used it, but would definitely consider it if many people have good experiences. -
I think almost everyone uses it. I always do, and I still end up with way too many breeding mares :P
-
I decided to just try it and only lost 5 or so (of 30+) mares. Seems like a pretty useful feature!
-
I use it all the time, too. It doesn't cull too many fillies, I've found, and, like Maribo, I still end up with too many mares.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
SandyCreek Farm: ID# 441
also playing H&J1 as SandyCreek Acres: ID# 137592 -
I use it a lot since becoming a level 5. Trying to cull down my mare herds. I have way too many intact mares, some I have never bred. I find the same as Maribo and SandyCreek Farm. Sometimes it doesn't spay as many as I thought it would. I do lose an occasional Mare that I really, really liked her color. RE: Buttermilk Buckskin. But if she wasn't going to be as good a breeder as her dam, I really didn't need her to stay intact. I will always try next year.

Always use it.

I always use it
-
If SMA spays it, it wasn't worth breeding.
-
I use it too. Definitely keeps down the amount of mares I create, lol.

Honestly, it's worth that moment of Nooooooooooooooooo...... when SMA spays a mare you really liked, in the long run. It saves you a barnful of babies that have low PTs or gelded/poorly papered stud colts from her, because studs get culled much more readily (which means they are higher quality), and the secret to successful intact babies is to breed colts and mares who are of comparable (better) quality. Besides, you can always keep her to show if you really like her. The only time it really hurts is if it was a straw I might not get again, but even if a straw wasn't guaranteed players are usually pretty generous about letting you try again.
When I look back on stuff I kept even though it was unevenly bred because I liked the color, or kept breeding even though they papered badly (same reason), or (ack) GMT'd to a mare because a horse didn't make the cut as a stallion in my early days of breeding, I kind of roll my eyes at then-me.
Put this on a sticky note and slap it on your monitor: There's always next season. And they come pretty fast on HJ2.
Oh, and one more thing! I'm finding that my pasture babies are rarely ever spayed by SMA, once I have the pasture mares culled to good quality, so work on that!
