PFs/TNP/high PT - pasture or barn?
-
Where do you keep your PF/TNP/High PT mares and why? Right now mine are all in pastures. Should I love some to the barn for training and showing? If like to hear what everyone does :)

I personally have to preference points over better foals, so I keep ALL of my brood mares in the stalls unless I have them marked as don't show because they've levelled into a place of consistently placing last. I figure the extra show bonus is more important to me than better foals.

I don't have many foundations these days, but my mares all move into the pastures at age 3 and stay there until I am done breeding them. With my current mare shortage this is taking longer than the 6-8 months it took in the past.
However, I have an old and established herd, and I am neck deep in show horses. My daily bonus is creeping up towards 100k.
The best thing you can do right now is also the hardest. Keep your breeding costs down, pasture breed, even if you don't keep the mares in there for an extended period of time there is no reason you can't cycle them through the pasture with the right stud. And save every penny you can for more, bugger, barns to keep show horses in. Don't get the ten stall barn it's inefficient, save up for the 90/120/210 barns. Keep every horse you breed as a show pony. Avoid spending money on fancy horses, or GMT's or straws or eggs or anything like that. If you are going to splurge and spend RL money spend it on barns. A 1k horse barn will do far more to get you ahead in this game than any amount of fancy genes will
If you need to increase your funds rapidly you can also go the No Show Horses route for a few months. Fill every stall in your barns and pastures with intact mares, doesn't matter their quality. Better if you are breeding them horrible uneven, that way the mass tests will cull them all and save you some clicks. Cycle random foundy mares through a pasture with a nice stud or two, cull them with the free tests, but don't run any other tests on them. Throw them all in the auction. 100 foundation mares having babies that you just sell for pure profit will earn you another 200k-ish a month. That'll fund a smaller breeding operation that keeps it's costs down and let you save money for a nice barn so you can start building a show herd.
Then you don't have to worry about your breeding mares showing. -
I have all my TNP mares in pastures. My PF girls are up in the barns so they can show, but they also get used as surrogates for implanting embryos, and since I only keep StySty Chestnuts they can contribute to my breeding herd if I need them. I try out new create stallions on them, to see how they do, and I don't have to move them around like I might need to if they were in pastures. It works really well for me!
