Culling nexus
  • I am wanting to make my nexus line on a smaller scale. I have a superior son that is also superior to his brothers. So I know to snip his brothers but is there another way to cull my mares? I know AFPT but is there another way to do it?

Also should I keep at least 2 2g nexus boys?
  • Since we don't have a comparison test for mares, AFPT is the best way to make a choice, but it's important not to cull on the basis of one or two foals, given the relatively wide range in potential foal results. For the higher generations, it might help to look at the pedigree and weed out mares with a visible weak spot--mares or stallions anywhere in the lines that are worse than their parent of the same gender, for instance.

I would definitely recommend keeping at least two stallions with the same paper level in each generation as one way to keep some variety in your blood lines. Otherwise, you will always be looking for outside stallions or brood mares to keep your line from becoming intensely interbred. Granted, this is not a potential killer in the game, barring potentially lethal homozygous genes, but many players avoid having too much inbreeding in their lines.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
