Increasing White Factor with GMT?
-
Is there a way to increase a horse's white factor through GMTs? Or if a horse has a WF: None or Minimal is it just destined to never really be able to show a lot of white, even if we add on Kit genes?
-
Unfortunately, no. You cannot change the white factor. I wish we could though since I would love to change my stud's white factor to anything but "None" :(
-
I thought adding white, splash, or frame increased a horse's white factor. Or is that only for lined horses?
-
No, it won't change the actual "white factor". You can make more white show by adding those genes but where it says "WF: None" will not change. Here's some examples that I own of WF: None but with other genes that express white:
AHH 1G Whisper APP
AHH 1G Pumpkin Latte Bsnf
AHH 1G Roo FRM APP
Here's the list of all my foundation mares with WF: None. Most don't show white very much if at all but the appaloosas and splash horses etc will still show white

I hope that makes sense :D

Darn. I added Tobiano to a horse and it basically just doesn't even show up. :/ Oh well, live and learn. I'll have to keep it in mind when picking out horses to GM in the future. Maybe if I feel brave enough to chance it later I can try adding Splash to him instead.
Thank you for the answer! -
Bummer! But, remember, if it's a breeder it will still pass on the tobiano. It will still have the ability to produce 'louder' foals!
-
That is true at least. :)
-
@Kinetic adding W20 will often increase expression of any other kit gene or splash, even with a low white factor. However, how much it increases the expression is somewhat variable and it seems, in my very casual observation, to increase some what exponentially as WF goes up....so with WF None your expression of tobiano might go from nonexistent to minimal. Or it might not change at all...
-
We used to be able to gmt white factor, maybe I should put it into the next weekend wishes!
-
This mare is a WF of minimal; and homozygous Splash. She had no white on her before I added W20, now she has minimal splash markings.
(The white clouding is Kit Promoter)
Quintessential CH hSF KP
This mare has a WF of Medium, and is also homozygous Splash, with W20 (as Cheers said, it can often increase the white expression.) She was bred from two WF 'minimal' horses, that were almost solid colours.
III Snow Storm i8
Snow Storm has probably the most white for her WF possible, whereas Quintessential above most likely has the most minimal possible WF expression.AztecArabians

You can still have a good amount of white on even if they have low white factor. My Nanotech's white factor is none, and when I created her she was white with grey ears! Took patn off and rerolled her and she can get color now, but as you see, she still has a lot of white for a "Non white" horse.
The Elven Word -
@Wildland Acres, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the Nanotech Primer RS has high expression of white pattern because of the W20 in combination with W2. Though pattern 1 does produce the heavy white blanket, too.
I remember reading somewhere that the white factor was no longer GMTable because Ammit is slowly moving toward a more realistic expression. Hence the addition of W20, which is a known "booster" of white patterns at the Kit loci.
