Appy and Roan Genes
  • This may be a silly question, but how do you tell if a horse is homozygous or heterozygous for the appaloosa and roan genes?
  • Hom appy is Llp Llp (I think)
    Hom roan is Kitr Kitr

  • Hey Appernak!

As Paradise says, you can tell most easily by genetic testing your horse and looking at the test results to give you a definitive answer.

There is no visual way to tell if a horse is homozygous or heterozygous for roan as far as I know--roan has quite variable amounts of expression so just looking at a roan isn't always your best guide. However, horses can only express a maximum of 2 Kit patterns at a time in this game, so if your horse also expresses Tobiano or Sabino or one of the white spotting genes along with their roan, you know for sure they can only be heterozygous for roan.

With appy you can sometimes tell just by looking at a horse that it is homozygous for appy. Homozygous appy is often expressed as a "few spot" pattern. You can't see this pattern with heavy varnish aps and it can be really hard to see with snowcaps (where there is a really minimal white "blanket" just at the top of the rump) but for horses with large blankets or near whole body white, it can be very easy to pick. I'm putting a few examples below.

This is a near leopard with heterozygous Lp, so he has lots of spots.

Where as this girl has nearly as white a body but no/few spots which indicates she's a homozygous Lp

This guy is a pretty typical blanket Appaloosa with lots of spots over his blanket and heterozygous Lp.

And this is a homozygous Lp few spot blanket Appaloosa.

But, varnish appy expresses the same way on both, so the genetic test is your best bet to tell for sure!

  • Thank you both very much!!
  • Oh, this was extremely helpful for me too. What all is LP?
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
  • I believe LP is the leopard or "spot" gene

  • Lp = leopard complex....There are also appies that are Lp that are known as 'characteristics only" and are registered CO... My fella here, is an appaloosa with one Lp gene...and he would be considered as 'characteristics only" eg. mottling on the nose, striped hooves..
