Unexpected Hom DP?
-
After breeding a perlino mare to a roan dun stallion, I ended up with quite a dark buckskin foal. The extensive rabicano does make it a little difficult to see how dark the filly is. Given she has only one copy of the Sty, am I correct in thinking she's likely homozygous for DP and each of the parents are at least carriers?

I don't think she carries DP. If she didn't have a copy of Cream, she would be Brown. She is a super nice little filly though!

I think she would look something like this:

That is possible! I still have a hard time telling with the At buckskins. And, looking through the horse search doesn't help! Their degrees of darkness (a good name...must remember it!) seem much more subtle than the others!
-

I subjectively think your filly is at least as dark as Berry....possibly darker. But At buckskins are darker than A or A+ buckskins naturally so I'm not confident she's DP DP.
-
And i will chime in one more time to say I have a really hard time picking DP brown on foals. I do much better with them when they're adults and you can see that belly color better...with her splash you won't get that clue quite as well but I would definitely plan to revisit this thread in a week when she's aged up and compare her back to Berry then!
-
I am still pretty sure that she's not got DP..
Unless I am mistaken, I don't think that either RS Conversation Hearts or RS A Rhythm of Four have DP unless their owner GMTed them.. Right?
@Cheers
Wouldn't the horse have to have at least 3 genes (combination of DP and Sty) to have the liver show up at all?
@Waldgraf
Either way, she is a gorgeous filly and if you put her up for sale I'd buy her in a heartbeat!ID# 2353 -
@jahdaz. I didn't realize the mare was a Rhythm of Four create. I think all RoFs are het DP. And as far as I know, any RS can get random DP as an Easter Egg, just like any other random create can. I may be incorrect on both of those points, so anyone who knows different please correct me!
That said, yes, for the stallion to be registered to the liver club he would have to have 3 darkening genes. He only has one sooty though, so he could have one DP hiding and not be in the club. And the filly is brown based, not red based, so she's not eligible for the liver club even if she did have 3 darkening genes. -
Rhythm of four are het DP so there is a chance she got one from her dam
She doesn't look look she has dp to me . I may be wrong .
-
I think she's most likely got one copy of DP, but I honestly don't think she's hom. This is the closest I can find in my herd and I think he's got one copy as well. I have an inkling that DP is expressed slightly darker than a sty on a buckskin, but her pangare is really throwing me off. It can make the belly seem even more golden which makes the the base look darker than it is. Cute little filly though!

Oo! I'm loving the mystery of it. She might need a bit of a name change - her current one suggests too much decisiveness!
I agree she looks a lot like Berry, Cheers. Though, the topline of her neck is the only place where the rabicano isn't showing, so it's so hard to tell. Waiting until she ages up is a good idea! -
I don't think she has DP she only has one sty she would need two sty to be at least het DP..but I could be wrong
-
Horses can still have/carry DP without the Ssty gene, it just wont show on their coats. DP requires three darkening genes to be visibly present.
-
Starfire and Coeur: LIVER requires 3 darkening genes. DP and Sooty are expressed regardless of each other and there is no requirement for one to be present for another to be expressed. DP will darken the coat regardless of whether Sooty is present.
In this case one Sooty is present and I think it's likely one DP is also present. -
oh ok hum I didn't know that thank you for telling me Cheers:) yesterday I did see a mare that has one sty but she was liver it confused me I thought I had the DP thing figured out but I guess not haha
-
Revisiting this now that they've all grown up. Love how she turns out - but am definitely convinced she's at least het DP but still a little suspicious she might be homozygous. The topline of her neck along her mane looks quite dark - but, I'm far from an expert! I'd love some additional thoughts.
-
You never look at the top line. That is black pigment. DP only affects red pigment.

Oh interesting! Good to know!
