Helpful hint: Older horses in the auction
-
For the newer folks out there, if you see a 10 year old or older, spayed or gelded horse in the auction, chances are, even if it has a great PT, it's being put in the auction because it is a poor show horse. It leveled off in a bad place and will only lose shows for the rest of it's life, never really earning any more points.
I had a new player pick up several poor showers I had placed in the auction recently, she unfortunately paid far more than these horses will ever likely earn her. I am working to buy them back now but that it not something you should expect. If you want to pick up show horses, buy nice foals and bring them up yourself, or better, look at the availiable to adopt horses. The auction can be a tricky place if you are still learning what makes a good show horse. -
For myself, I'll take anything no matter what. If it has a decent amount of points, say more than 150, I'll buy it. Regardless of whether the horse picks up many more points, it still adds to your show bonus. I don't usually sell my show ponies and I generally only keep my higher gen spays/geldings.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

A 10 year old horse with 150 points that never earns another point and is purchased for 2600hb's in the auction will be 16 before it has paid itself off and actually starts earning you money. And will only earn you roughly 600hb's before it starts rolling the dice to pass out of the game. You are far better off using that show spot for a better horse. If you have more barn slots than you know what to do with it's okay, but most folks, especially new players, have a limited number of barn spots.
Just trying to help new folks avoid warehousing horses that aren't earning thier keep. Or worse, paying 6kHB's for a horse with 230 points. That is just losing money.Thanked by 1Beadingterri -
For any newer players out there now trying to figure out how to know if a show pony is a good deal--
Assume the horse will never earn another point in its life.
Take the current number of points the horse has (let's say 200 for ease of calculations) and figure out what roughly 3/4 of that is (150 in this case). This is how many hbs this horse will add to your show bonus on a weekly basis for the rest of its life.
Now figure out how many weeks there are til the horse hits its rollover between 17 and 18 years. Multiply that number by the 150 and you have your break even point--the maximum you can spend on the pony and expect to break even at the end.
Now, obviously, for horses that aren't leveled off, you can expect them to earn some more points but it's hard to predict how many. And if your prospective purchase has Levelled off in the top half of a class, it will continue to earn possibly quite a few points every week...but it's safest to do your calculation based on th points the horse actually has accumulat d and then decide how risky it is to purchase from there. After all, the point of show ponies is to make you money, not cost you in the long run. I don't care how pretty the show pony is, how many LE or special genes it has, what it's PT is....if you spend more than it's likely to make you, you've made a poor business choice.Thanked by 1Beadingterri -
Again, I said for myself I'll take anything that will add a reasonable amount to my show bonus, even if it's only say, 150 HBs a week. I have the room to keep them all, though. I also prefer a horse that's going to make me HBs now, instead of in a couple months. But again, that's MY preference. I just keep them all.

Kass I'm actually loving your gen 3-5s in the auction these days....lots of pretty foals from your barns have made their way into my new show barns!
-
My 3 and 4gs aren't producing well for me right now lol. I keep the ones with an 11.4 or higher pt, usually. Sometimes less if they're pretty :))
-
I'm picking up most everything you send with an 11 or over, some down to 10.6.

Thank you for this information! I've tried to approach buying show horses at auction wisely - mostly looking at recent show results to see if they place well in at least half of classes they've shown in since leveling at their current level.
But, I have been wondering how to determine how much I can spend on a horse and still profit from them in their show career. @Cheers - that's a good guideline to go off of - thank you! -
Happy to help, Waldgraf!
