Superiority Testing
  • So, there's strict breeding advice. My understanding is that if a foal is intact after SBA, it is considered better than both its sire and dam.

Between sire and foal, what would the incentive be to complete the comparison test if the foal has passed SBA? Unless, of course, they test two different factors.

  • Actually, strict breeding advice shows whether your horse would be better at breeding or showing. It does compare the foal to the sire and dam, but comparison testing is a great way to see if your foal is worse, as good or a better breeder than the sire or whichever stallion you test it against.

I've had several colts who were worse breeders than their sires pass the strict advice, but I snipped them after comparison testing.

  • When strict breeding advice compares a foal with its parents, it only snips the ones that are significantly worse breeders than one or both parents. Foals that are superior, about the same, or slightly worse will all pass SBA intact. The difference between strict breeding advice and regular breeding advice is how much worse a foal can be before it gets snipped.

Both levels of breeding advice also look at consistency and compare the foal's relative breeding and showing abilities, (with SBA being tougher to pass for everything).
