There's a fairly large number of people playing this game. We're not all on every day, so I'm not sure what the total is, but the forum is usually pretty busy. There are players from all over the world. Here's a link to a thread where people were telling where they come from.

There's a good introduction to the basics of the game in the FAQ and Breeding Info links at the bottom of the left menu. This is a pretty complex game, though, so feel free to ask any specific questions that you may have. We're a friendly group and like helping new players.
