Successful Breeder

What do you think makes a horse a successful breeder? What things do you look for when buying straws/breeding live cover? Or what do you look for when deciding to keep one of your stallions or mares intact?
-
First priority for me is making sure they've passed Breeding Advice (and Strict Breeding Advice if you're a premium member). After that, for stallions I always test them against their sires and only keep/use stallions that are superior to their sires.
After that really the only thing you can use to estimate breeding ability is AFPT or comparison testing stallions against each other. I personally don't have a premium upgrade so to get AFPT I have to do the math myself - usually not worth it for me to take the time. If I have too many stallions (which happens basically every season) I'll comparison test them against each other too to eliminate some of them (keeping any that test superior to the others and gelding the inferior ones).
If I have a colour or size theme for the line of course I'll also cull breeders that don't meet those requirements but it really has nothing to do with breeding quality.
Mainly, to determine if a horse'll probably be a good breeder I'll compare its paper level to its generation and see if it stands up to my requirements (ex: second gen red/B). -
I basically do the same as Elemental. I always compare my colts with their sires..and only breed the superior ones. If I have a group of colts from one sire and the funds for it, I'll compare them against each other so I can find the best of the best and mark him for a main breeding stud.
I prefer that horses are papered properly according to their gen. ie c/yellow, b/red, a/blue etc..
I always test all my horses with strict breeding advice and only breed those who have passed.
Im kinda fussy about my broodmares. I judge them based on their PT and the PT of the foal they throw. Ie my .05 PT mare who threw a foal with 10+ PT..she's a keeper. I usually keep anything that throws 10+ PT foals...if they throw lower I either spay them or sell them..but thats just me..
Annnd yes, on occassion, I will keep a horse just because of its colour..if it doesnt pass SBA, I keep it as a show pon..Thats just me tho lolz..Champion Appaloosas
