What type of Appy is she?
-
Is there a way to figure out what type of appy this girl is? She has a few specks, but that's it.
1HH Spot me an Asset -
She is hetero for the Lp gene...(Lplp) and she doesnt have any of the Patn genes ( which would give her more white markings)
Because she only has the one Lp gene, she is showing the mottling of skin on her muzzle and the striped hooves ( appaloosa characteristics)..
Heres a bit of an explanation of how the appy patterns would show with variations of the Lp gene and Patn1 or Patn2
Your mare would be the Lplp no PATN = characteristics only
lplp PATN1 - not an appy
lplp PATN=small - still not an appy
lplp no PATN - You guessed it, still not an appy
Lplp PATN1 - leopard appaloosa
Lplp PATN=small - blanket appaloosa
Lplp no PATN - characteristics only
LpLp PATN1 - few spot appaloosa
LpLp PATN=small - snow cap appaloosa
LpLp no PATN - characteristics only
Here's a bit of a visual chart that explains the appy genes and combos

and another one..

I hope this helps a bit :)Champion Appaloosas -
That actually helps! So, if I wanted to try for a snowflake foal, would that be a possibility for this mare? Or would she always be solid or go varnish? (looking at the 2nd link you posted)
-
To get a snowflake foal, you'd have to breed to a snowflake stud..and yes, she will throw coloured foals...
Try looking for a stud that is Patn1Patn1... The foal should get at least one P1 and that will give it some colour..
Also, remember, if you breed to a snowflake, the foal will be hetero for the snowflake gene and its highly like the snowflake pattern wont show up on the foal (it may be leopard or blanketed etc) but it will carry the snowflake gene and can pass it down to offspring..
Here's a mare of mine who has 3 foals so far...2 are patterned..

My snowflake stud is LpLp Patn1Patn1 and he throws all coloured foals..Here are foals from a solid mares

and there are a few more..

so if I bred the foal with 1 of the genes to another snowflake, would I have a possibility to get a foal with 2 genes?
Sorry - I'm very new to the genetics part. I'm still figuring out what homo/hetro means for breeding lol -
yes, if you bred a hetero snowflake foal to say, a homo snowflake ( one that is dominant for snowflake) you would likely get a snowflake foal..
if you breed hetero to hetero..you may get snowflake or non snowflake with other appy patterns just depends on what genes the foal gets at time of breeding :)
heterozygosis
basically means that a horse has a pair of alleles where one is dominant and the other recessive ie..Lplp where the Lp would be the dominant gene and the lp recessive...or Ee where the E ( black) gene is dominant and the e is recessive.
The two alleles are DIFFERENT in HETEROzygosis
Lplp
Ee
Chch
Zz
homozygosis -
means both genes ( alleles) are the SAME..
ie
LpLp the leopard complex gene
EE which would give you a black based horse or
ee which would give you a chestnut based horse..
ChCh -champagne
ZZ silver...
main thing to note is that both alleles are the SAME when referring to HOMOzygosis
I hope that helps a bit...genetics is a complicated thing to learn. Im sure with most of us, its an ongoing learning process :)

perfect! I just want to make sure.
Looking at a horse (whether its an app or not) how do you know if it's hom/het? And how do you know if a mare/stallion is a snowflake? is it by the "looks" or is it a specific gene? -
to look at a horse...better to look at genes.. for example...
These 2 horses are hetero for the Lp gene..ie Lplp

thundercolt
and these 2 are homo for the Lp gene...LpLp
Kc2 Rain of Spots
Non Pareil
From what I understand, in this game...the snowflake gene is hidden..so they only way to know would be if it appears with a snowflake pattern...or if you look at the pedigree and see a snowflake ancestor...Champion Appaloosas
