How long to give a show horse to prove itself
-
Forthebirds
I've read where people said not to assess a horse's showing potential based on how it performs at the lower levels. How long do you give them to prove themselves? Her PT is 9.2 so I thought she would be decent but she's been in 6 shows and has no points. -
Foals don't train. She won't start earning points until she is 2.
-
Oh that makes sense! Thanks :)
-
My foals are earning points. They aren't available to train until they're two but they are earning points.
-
Sorry, that wasn't very clear. I meant training points. She has accumulated show points, but her training number stays the same until she turns 2.

There are so few horses entered in most of the Level 1 classes (where foals are placed) that luck plays a larger role in how well they place and whether they gain any points than anything else. Her luck has placed her last in all her classes.
Additionally, this foal is inconsistent, and it looks like her score in her shows is at least +/- 3, that means she is scoring anywhere from +3 to -3 with a base score of 0.
If you have limited barn space, you might want to send her to the auction, since it is going to take several game years until she's earning many show points from how well she places in her classes.
On the other hand, if you have room to keep her, she might eventually make a decent profit for your barn. She looks, so far, to be fairly lucky. Her score has swung up to the top of her potential 3 times, hit the base score once, and only swung down twice. I have had inconsistent horses that ended up doing quite well, and even one with a 9.2 PT score can eventually make you some money. When she gets into larger classes, if that luck of swinging up toward the top of her potential holds, she may just surprise you.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Thanks SandyCreek! I noticed my other babies were getting points so I came back to this thread and found more answers.
I'd hate to off her since she's my first HJ2 foal, but if she's not earning her keep it might be worth the sadness. -
As long as you have room in your barn, she's probably worth keeping to see how she matures. Any horse, with luck, can earn some money. For what it's worth, I would say that she will probably add to her show score in a 3, 2, 3 pattern, or something like that. Once she turns, two, it will take her about 3 weeks to level up into 2 local. Give her a week there, and then show her. If her score swings up, she'll have a chance of placing fairly well in her class. It would be worth showing her twice that week, and then again twice the next week.
Assuming her base score is 0 at the moment, once she turns two she should add to her score each week. Her base score would be 3 the first week in April, 5 or 6 the second week, and 8 the following week. The 4th week, her base score should be 11, and the 5th week either 13 or 14. This would be the time for a trial showing. If her score swings up, she may have anywhere from 14 to 17, which might put her in the middle of the class and she can gain a few show points. If her score swings down, she won't be adding points, most likely. It will be a gamble every time you show her, but only time will tell if she'll be one of the lucky ones that tends to have her score swing up a fair amount of the time.
Here's an example, with a horse of mine that has a PT score only a few tenths of a point higher than your filly.
Porithan
She's 17 years old, with a PT of 9.5. She's inconsistent, too. She's showing at 7 national and placing pretty regularly in the top half of her classes. This evening, she has a lifetime total of 1393 points, and a lifetime profit of 1678 hbs (that is income from show prizes over and above the cost to enter her in her shows). She adds a little over 1000 hbs to my showing bonus each week.
As you can see, it was well worth the gamble of hanging on to her and keeping her showing. This won't always happen with lowish PT inconsistent horses, but it is possible.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
