so...is there a definite way to know if your horse has DP? I've been looking around the forum trying to find an answer but have not had much luck :(Owner Of Bellwether Farm
Sport pony breeding farm focused on breeding, selling and showing quality ponies. Specializing in breeding brown, DP, dun, sooty+, & W8. -
Not really. If you get a herd helper (I think RSs are the only ones), or if you GMT create one. If both parents are Homozygous for DP you can make a pretty good guess. That's why it's so cool! DP and KP are both hidden genes!
-
What confluence said but there are certain colors that you do know for sure.....liver chestnuts have one copy DP unless they are the really dark ones that look black, then they are homozygous DP
-
Is Galustra Plume still a hidden gene as well? All I really know about it is that it has to homozygous and only shows on bay based horses.
-
Oh yeah, GP is hidden, too! I think it also shows on browns.
friesian, couldn't you have DP DP Ssty and get a liver chestnut (not black). Since they need 2 Ssty AND 2 DP for the black? Hmmm...may need to go do a search and see what I can find!
ETA: Found one! http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=773517 he has to have DP DP SSty
Thanked by 1KniKna -
Liver or chocolate pal requires 3 darkening gene so it can be DP SSTY SSTY or DP DP SSTY if they have 2 DP and 2 SSTY then they are the really dark black chestnuts .I have a couplr of DP DP SSTY livers http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=310602 and http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=643404
And one Black chestnut she is DP DP SSTY SSTY

O yea sorry forgot about that combination possibility!

GP shows on bay, buckskin, brown, and any one of those in combo with dun. Also, perlino register in the GP club. But because perlino, and perlino dun are usually so light based colors, you can't see the plume very well.
