    I got my very first Black or dark livers today. Are they harder to come by than standard livers?
    My liver herd threw a lot of foals with spots but are not appys. Is that DP?

    Black livers are the rarest of the livers because it requires them to be hom Sty and hom DP.

    It would help if you posted a link to the horses you are talking about, but in general DP has nothing to do with spots or white markings.

    If the word "liver" or "chocolate" is in the color name then they definitely have DP. Black livers are tougher because they have to have TWO copies of the DP allele (aka they are homozygous for DP) to be that dark.

    You may be seeing lots of dapples, they do show up on livers quite a bit.

    This one is my favorite foal this season. I will be color testing when I have the funds to do so.

    I can tell you, without the testing, that the draft filly is black liver chestnut. The color name will only say liver chestnut, when you test her.

    To get black liver you need FOUR things. 2 SSty's and 2 DP's. (SSty + SSty +DP + DP = Black liver) Since the DP is a hidden gene you won't know for sure if both are there until you see the foal. Any combination of THREE of the above genes will get you a liver. (SSty + SSty +DP = Liver, or SSty +DP + DP = Liver, etc). So any 'red' liver will have at least one DP.

    The spots are dapples. You can get dapples on any color, but they show up best with DP and, from what I've seen, with S+.

    Silver also gives dapples more often.
