Culling Strategies and Other Newbie Thoughts
-
Is there an open Buddy Chat that discusses culling strategies and quality enhancement? As a player that has been here less than two months, I am looking to breed quality horses would like a place to ask questions and get pragmatic answers back. I know I make lots of mistakes, but am doing my best to learn. I have a list from Cheers that I do my best to follow, but I am sure different top breeders have different approaches or nuances to the approaches.
Also, is there a game etiquette post that lists the expected game behaviours? examples - Is it OK to buy a horse and change its name, buy a cheap horse and resell at a high price, etc? If you have a premium account is it expected that you will do all the testing, or is it OK if the foal is not what you are looking for to cut your losses and toss it in the auction and stop testing? -
Changing the name. Yep no issue.
If the horse was cheap it is VERY unlikely it is worth more than you paid for it. You won't make money flipping horses. The exception is buying horses for less than 2500 and selling them in the public auction.
Totally ok to auction untested horses. Should not be sold on the public sales till tested though.

Right now there is not an open Buddy Chat. Ammit said, in another post, that it is on her list of things to do, but she hasn't had a chance to get to it yet. I see that you are in the Beginners Barn. I have several long time members in there as well, so you should, hopefully, be able to get a variety of opnions.
There is not an etiquette post. I've thought of making a list, but it is really kind of subjective, and there will be all kinds of exceptions.
To answer the questions you asked:
It is definitely ok to change a horses name. I do it all the time. I don't like the 'coded' names that include generation numbers and genes.
Buying a cheap horse and reselling it at a higher price might be ok, if the difference isn't too huge, I think. Buying a horse for 2500 and setting it for resale at 50,000 is a bit over the top. I've done it from time to time, I have to admit, but it is usually a horse that I got from the auction, and I will frequently offer, or just send, the previous owner some cash to make up (most of) the difference. Since anyone can check the sales records it is kind of embarassing to get caught out doing it. It is not against the rules, per se. You will get called out on it if it looks like you are taking advantage of another players lack of knowledge, or misfortune.
I regularly cut my losses with foals, in regards to testing. Most people will accept a horse with only the free testing. However, if I see an upgraded account member that USUALLY tests all their horses, selling one that is NOT tested for a price that I consider too high, I will usally say something.
Basically, the ethics and etiquette is just general courtesy. Do unto others, etc. As in every large community there will be people who just take advantage because they can. The occasional slip is ok, but if you are trying to make a quick buck at someone elses expense we will ask questions.
