How do you figure the ratio
-
I have 180 mares. I have 69 stallions. I ha e 30 spayed mares and 49 geldings.
How do I figure out what my ratio is for my horses. I know I want a greater show barn than breeding horses.
On my stallions i want at least 6 foundation studs or is that a bit much and then 2 stallions for each gen after that.
Is it easier to cull my studs or my mares?
As far as color I am having a hard time deciding which color i want to strive for so would my best bet be to cull on pt scores even though that doesnt have anything to do with breeding ability. Or should I choose my height. I know I want to eventually be an all draft barn except for my Joeys Dream line. -
I wouldn't worry too much about the ratio. The thing I posted about percentages of breeding stock to show stock is just to emphasize that, if you want to completely fund your breeding program with show horses, you need a BUNCH of show horses. It's a balance that is difficult to find. Do you put your mares in the pasture and get the breeding bonus, but lose the showing money? Do you set really tough culling goals? Do you let yourself be sentimental about the pixel ponies? That is the great part about this game....YOU decide. What is the worst that can happen? You can't lose this game!
When it comes to color, I have a couple of lines. My main focus is my black chestnuts. But I also have a pretty hefty line of GP horses coming along, a few decent S+ horses and a tiny W10 and Spl2 line going. I am planning on starting a chocolate palomino line as well. I would suggest picking one main color, but allowing yourself some hobby lines, just to play with and see what you get. I got tired of the KP, Pearl, and Satin horses I had, so I sold them to move on to the W10 and Spl2. I'm getting a bit bored with the Spl2, so I'm starting the choco/palo line. Don't think that you have to lock yourself into one pattern or color.
It is WAY easier to cull stallions, because there are more tests for stallions. But remember, Ammit is working on a new system for testing that might help out a LOT!

I want to become a sustained barn. Hopefully next year calendar year I can get a few things on here that I want.

I have about 1/3 breeding stock. I used to get barn IV money by auctioning a bunch of created mares and pasture bred foals, but now my bonus is big enough I just save up. I just keep the foals from my regular stock that isn't colored nice enough or alters it anyway, or sometimes isn't PTd high enough but they're too gorgeous to Yum.

The new tests won't give you any more info than the current ones.
