Comparison Testing and Culling
-
I have too many young Gen 2 stallions in the pipeline and looking to cull. Four of them papered A and the rest papered B but compared AGA the A's. All others have been/will be culled (still working through the foals).
When I cull I would keep the A's as I have to assume they are better than the Bs at some level. Since I have way too many B's to ever breed, can I safely assume all the B's are relatively equal and cull based on PT and/or colour to round out the herd, or is there a better way? How big or small is the range of "about as good as bucket"? -
Yes your 2g A boys are better than your 2g B boys. If your 2g B boys are testing aga to tje A boys then you can bet that they are very high B.
I just compared 4 brothers and I have 1 that compared superior to the rest. I would geld any foal that is worse than your A boys. If they test aga to the A boys then you can base it off of pt scores and color. Remember pt scores has nothing to do with breeding ability.Thanked by 1DragonRun -
So if all the B boys test as good as the A boys then I have to assume that the B boys will all have similar breeding ability. If PT scores have a hereditary factor, then I would assume that culling based on PT should potentially increase the PTs of the future generation. Am I correct in these assumptions?

"About as good as" could mean literally as good as, or slightly worse. I personally would only keep the A papered superior boys. For instance, I just got a star papered colt sired by another star. He only tested AGA his sire, so he's getting snipped and kept for a show pony, even though he's a star papered colt.
Find yourself a "benchmark" colt, meaning the best of the bunch. Anything that doesn't paper as good as AND test as good as, gets snipped. So any B papered boys are always going to be slightly worse, even though they test "about as good as". -
I have an 'A' benchmark colt and have compared every stallion to him. If I had produced enough Gen 2 A Stallions then I could snip all the B's - too easy. I am really trying to figure out how to sort through the B's that all compare as good as the A benchmark if I need to keep some. Is there no way to differentiate the B's from each other, or is the approach of keeping the highest PTs of the B's as valid as any approach?
-
If all the Bs test as good as the As then they are all about the same in ability and there's really no way to weed them out strictly by breeding ability at that point.
Next I would probably go by which colors I preferred to whittle them down further, but you can go by PT instead. I think that would be as valid as anything else. Maybe you could look at consistency also and use that.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

Thank-you. They have all been consistency tested. I have the fortunate issue of a bumper crop of Gen 2 studs. I think I will cull using a mixture of PT and colours and patterns. I am comfortable so far with my Gen 2 stud quality. Now if only we had tests that would help us cull the mares as strictly. I am still pretty new to the game, and want to make sure I am not missing something.

For me, if it's a colt from a B papered foundation, I don't keep ANY of the B papered colts, even if I only get one A papered colt that season. Same goes for my 3g Colts, if they're from regular create/perfect foundations, they need to paper A or they get snipped.
As far as mares, once they have 3 foals you can paper them. In general, foundation and 2g mares should paper Red, 3g/4g should paper Blue, and 5g and up should paper Gold. Yellow papered mares get snipped.
You'll find your own way, it takes time. I've been at this a little over a year and I'm just now starting to really crack down on my quality and be really strict about it.Thanked by 1DragonRun
