As I was breeding my pastures I happened to breed a brindle, yay! Then I was promptly stumped because I'm used to seeing "Chimeric: Positive" and now I see "Mosaic".

My question is this, what is the difference? And where did the term mosaic come from? I understand chimeric and its meaning, but I haven't come across mosaic in genetic terms - only mosaic art.

Ammit made a note somewhere (Facebook?) that she was changing the terminology because mosaic was the more accurate description.

The way I understand it, chimeric is basically a fused set of genes. An example could be twins that fused in the early stages of development, or sometimes in some species stem cells will mix between twins (think freemartin cattle). Mosaics would be different genes being switched on. A black based horse could have one E gene and one e gene and still be black based. But, if in some locations only the E (black) is turned on and in other places only e (red) is turned on, you get oddly marked animals. That is my very basic understanding of the difference.

I don't understand this change either as chimera is an actual term for brindle horses where mosaic is not. Maybe @Ammit can explain what it means :)

Mosiac is the actual term as many brindles are not chimeras. Mosaic means two different kinds of DNA. Chimeric means DNA from two different individuals.

I'm guessing we will only be using Mosaic, instead of Brindle.

So far I have seen horses with stripes of different shades of the same color for brindle. Does this mean that we will have stopping of different colors (e base and E base, or roaned and not roaned...) Because that would be stunning. :)

I saw on a horse what looked like zebra stripes. What is that? Was that an LE?

No it's a tack item. You can click on the tack tab of any horse and see what they have on. :)
