weaning a colt
  • Orion is 7 months on the 25th. He has been separated during the day for ths last month. But tonight is his first night away from momma. I have spent 6 hours with him today. Brushing him and petting on him.
  • It's a tough time for everybody, I'm sure. I hope he'll soon be reconciled to the separation. Do you have a separate paddock or pasture where you can put him with another horse?

  • I have him in my dog run since my dogs dont like it. It is big enough for him. I only have 3 horses and if I put Sky in with him his momma will go through the fence on the other side of the house. He is on one side and Sky and gidget are on the other side. I will be up through most of the night checking on him. I took off his halter so he cant get it hung on anything.

Momma wasnt even trying to wean him which was aggravating as well.
  • I'm sure it was.

  • Weaning is always rough but they usually calm down pretty fast so hopefully it all goes smoothly expecially since he is older :)
  • He nickers when i come out to feed.
  • I'm a Canadian horse breeder and if the mare is healthy enough we like to leave our foals with mom till 11 months. But we also have the workings of a real herd, stallion, two babies and 3 mares. I see such a great benefit for their minds. The biggest reason I do it is because of how much better the foals look at 1 year. I just wanted to let you know in case you don't mind them being together for longer.
  • Well once I get my new mare in 2 weeks he will be back with Sky and his momma. Momma is a shetland pony sire is my APHA gelding now. My new mare is AQHA. Cant wait to get her and start breaking her out.
  • We have bred paints for a while. We have quit now just not much interest here even with his foals showing. I will be breeding her my new mare at 3 or 4. They have a AQHA perlino stud. Zips Chocolate Chip is the perlinos sire.
  • I wouldnt have a problem leaving fillies on for that long but I'd never leave a colt (unless gelded)with their mom past 6 maaaybe 7 months (although the chances are slim it has happened and Im just not willing to take any chances lol). Definitely not 11 months. Way too much of a risk of him breeding her or the other mares/fillies.
  • Orion may be my next stud. I havent really decided on him yet. He hasnt even dropped yet I think he will be closer to 3 before he does like Sky was. He is registered with IQPA.
