Should I geld

I have this handsome man silver pocket watch too but out of 10 I've deleted 6 (money got tight) but now I'm wondering if I'd be better off gelding him even though he passed test. One of the four babies alive has been tested and they got a 9.6
  • Since he's a Silver Pocket Watch, which is a rank special, I wouldn't geld him. Rank Specials are always at least Perfect Foundations and since they usually have genes that are hard to get in a regular create so they usually are fairly valuable. If you're running tight on hbs I would recommend selling him instead.

Also, I would consider the quality of the mares you are breeding him to as that as well as whether the mares had a pasture bonus or not can be a big indicator of the quality of foals you will get.
  • I agree with hollyhills. He is a Perfect Foundation, and 9.6 is a perfectly respectable result for one of his foals. If you can afford it at all, even if you spread the testing out over a couple of weeks, you should PT test the other foals of his that you kept. You can't get an average foal PT, the best indicator of a horse's breeding ability, unless as many foals as possible have been tested. To find a horse's Average Foal PT (usually abbreviated AFPT) add up the PT scores of all the tested foals then divide by the number of foals.

An experiment was done years ago, which showed that breeding two perfect foundation horses together (PT scores of 9.9, 100% breeding ability) has the possibility of producing foal PT scores ranging from 8.9 to 10.4. A random number from the sire's range is averaged with a random number from the mare's range to produce the PT of their foal. If both swing down, the foal's PT will be low in that range. If both swing up, the foal's PT will be high in the range. If both are somewhere in the middle, the foal's PT will be in the middle of the range, as it will if one number is high and the other is low.

  • I definitely wouldnt geld him. If you end up not wanting him you could always try to sell him.
  • Macy here's a list of all RS horses in case you forget. I would never suggest gelding or spaying a RS. If you're strapped for cash, they always sell for loads!

    Prices are almost always negotiable.
  • Also note, if you don't think he is producing good then maybe you should look at his mares. I have the same issue and it turned out my mares just weren't that good. Getting a pasture bonus on them will help
